UAE became firm favourites to clinch the ACC Trophy after the team considered to be their main competitor, Hong Kong, were eliminated in the preliminary stage itself. In their last match in Group C, Hong Kong suffered a 11-run defeat at the hands of Oman. The surprise contenders in the quaterfinals were Afghanistan, who got through on bonus points. Hong Kong have a month to recover from this debacle before their Asia Cup campaign in Sri Lanka - a tournament they got into after finishing second in the 2000 edition of the ACC Trophy.
