ICC ODI championship preview: India can climb to fourth in table

India can move to fourth place in the ICC One-Day International Championship table if it wins all of its matches in the TVS Cup in Dhaka, Bangladesh starting on Friday 11th April.

India will play hosts Bangladesh in the opening match of the three team tournament that also includes South Africa. The teams will play each other twice with the top two progressing to the final on Sunday 20th April.

If India emerges victorious without dropping a game, its rating will climb to 107, one higher than fourth placed Sri Lanka.

South Africa, under new captain Graeme Smith, will be hoping to make up lost ground on ICC ODI Championship leaders Australia. Prior to the ICC Cricket World Cup, South Africa's rating was only five behind Australia's but a poor showing on home soil has seen the gap open up to 13 points.

Bangladesh also had a disappointing ICC Cricket World Cup, falling further behind Kenya at the bottom of the table. If Bangladesh can win one of their first two matches it will boost its rating back into double figures for the first time since January.

New Zealander Billy Bowden will undertake his first assignment since being appointed to the Emirates Elite Panel of Umpires. Either Bowden or Aleem Dar from the Emirates International Panel of Umpires will stand alongside a local umpire in all of the matches.

Clive Lloyd from the Emirates Elite Panel of Referees will officiate in the seven matches which will all take place in Dhaka.

How the ICC ODI rankings work:

The formula used by the ICC to determine ranking positions takes into account the following factors:

- results from all ODI matches played over the previous two to three years
- strength of opposition, with greater reward for beating higher ranked opponents
- greater importance is placed on more recent results, with older matches dropped every 12 months
- all matches have equal status, with no account taken of venue or margin of victory
