ICC Under-17 Asia Cup: 3rd day Summary
Three matches were played on Monday, July 17, 2000
Three matches were played on Monday, July 17, 2000. Out of the six participants, Pakistan and Sri Lanka were the two recognized teams but pitched against weak opponents. This was unavoidable because in the Round Robin league each team had to face the other.
Except for the Pakistan Vs Kuwait match which touched the climax of 196 runs scored by Pakistan the other two matches were low scoring one sided contests. In this match played at the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium Karachi, Pakistan piled up 196 runs, a gigantic total for Kuwait a new entrant in the game.
Suleman Butt (45) and Khalid Latif (53) the two openers laid a solid foundation for Pakistan to be further consolidated by Faisal Khan's invaluable innings of 45. With an impressive haul of 4 for 32, Ajesh Mathew appeared a good future prospect.
Facing an almost unsurmountable target of 197 runs, Kuwait lost 3 wickets for 37 in 9 overs. Zeeshan Sabri played a useful innings of 22. Being an inexperienced side as compared to its opponents, the batsmen came in and returned to the pavillion without contributing much. As a result Kuwait was 85 for 8 in 28 overs.
Not being able to sustain the pressure Kuwait was all out for 108 runs. By claiming 4 important wickets, young Zaheer Maqsood proved the best bowler of the match. Pakistan won the match by 88 runs.
In a low scoring match between Sri Lanka and UAE played at the National Stadium Karachi, the UAE batted first and was crumbled for a total of 85 runs. Mohammad Abdullah (16) Aamer Shahzad (12) and Ghalib Arif (11) were the three batsmen to reach the double figures. Sri Lanka's Damith Gunathilake had demolished the UAE's innings with his haul of 4 for 18.
Facing an easily achievable target of 86 runs Sri Lanka managed it in 15 overs for the loss of one wicket only. With an exciting innings of 36 with 4 fours and a towering six Ehsan was the top scorer closely followed by Mutalip who scored a precious 32. Sri Lanka defeated UAE by 9 wickets.
The 3rd match of the day between Nepal and Bahrain played at Quetta, the capital of Baluchistan and a holiday resort for summers, disappointed the cricket lovers for its briefness.
Sent in to bat first, Bahrain, not being able to face Nepal's hostile bowling were all out for 42 runs in 23.4 overs only. Except for Rizwan Abdul Ghani (15) no other batsman scored more than 5 runs.
Nepal achieved the target for the loss of one wicket in 10 overs only, handing over a humiliating 9 wickets defeat to Bahrain.
