Ravindra Jadeja called up to ODI squad

Ravindra Jadeja, the left-arm allrounder, has been called up to India's ODI squad in England as a replacement for the concussed Gautam Gambhir. Suresh Raina has been named vice-captain of the squad.

Gambhir had sustained a head injury during the fourth Test against England at The Oval, when he fell backwards while dropping a catch. He could not open in either innings of that match, batting in the lower order as India slumped to a 0-4 defeat in the series. Although he was injured on August 20, the decision to send him home was taken only now.

"He [Gambhir] was diagnosed with mild concussion by the attending sports physician and neurologist, and sent for a precautionary CT and MRI scan of his head and neck, which was reported as normal," the BCCI said. "He has been resting since and his symptoms have improved.

"However, he still complains of some visual disturbance and inability to focus on an object for long. Gautam has been advised to take rest and is expected to recover spontaneously without any further medical intervention."

Jadeja's previous ODI appearance was against New Zealand in December 2010, after which he was overlooked for the tour of South Africa and the 2011 World Cup. Jadeja is the latest in the list of replacements India have had to call to England because of injuries to first-choice players. RP Singh, Varun Aaron and Ajinkya Rahane had already replaced Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma, Virender Sehwag, while Rahul Dravid, who was India's best batsman in the Test series, was included out of the blue as a reinforcement.
