India know they can trouble Australia - as they proved in the Test series - and with a few days of practice under their belts, they should be confident of at least making a decent contest of it.
The chances are that these two will make it through to the final anyway but Australia fear India and there is no better way to warm up for that potential final than by beating the winners of the past three World Cups in a group game.
India have a concern over the health of Sreesanth, who has been struggling with a fever, but otherwise they will be at full strength, which is good, as Australia looked in good nick against Sri Lanka.
Bet365 go 2/7 with India 5/2, which is a very generous price for a two-horse race with two sides that are by no means that unfairly matched. Australia deserve favouritism, of course, but if India won at the MCG, no one would be that surprised.
Captain Ricky Ponting and opener Matt Hayden are both 3/1 favourites to top-score for Australia and Hayden's amazing record at the MCG, in international cricket, makes him a very tempting bet.
But I fancy the chances of the other opener, Adam Gilchrist, who looked in good touch against Sri Lanka and has the ability to destroy a one-day attack in the first 15 overs. Gilly is on a mission to go out of international cricket on a high, so 7/2 could be a good price.
Michael Clarke is 5/1, Andrew Symonds is 13/2 and Michael Hussey and Brad Haddin are both 8/1.
No surprises at the top of the India betting with maestro Sachin Tendulkar the favourite at 11/4. Tendulkar loves playing on the big stage and he will be eyeing another hundred. Behind him, Gautam Gambhir and the destructive Virender Sehwag are both 4/1.
It's really time for Yuvraj Singh to show his ability by making a big score after his Test failures. The middle-order batsman is 5/1 to top-score, in-form captain MS Dhoni is 13/2 and Rohit Sharma is 7/1.
This is very tough to call but India have plenty of reasons to find their best form, so take the 5/2 and hope they deliver.
