Irish cricket loses major sponsor
The Irish Cricket Union has announced the end of its current sponsorship deal with the Bank of Ireland
The Irish Cricket Union has announced the end of its current sponsorship deal with the Bank of Ireland. The bank have been the official sponsor of the Irish Senior men's team since 2006, but have decided not to take the option of renewing their contract.
Warren Deutrom, the ICU's chief executive, said the bank was a "terrific sponsor of the men's senior team, and Irish cricket in general". He added: "They came into cricket when the sport had a low profile in Ireland, but have helped us grow in strength both on and off the field over that period for which we are very grateful."
Deutrom said that talks were taking place with potential replacements, although Irish cricket faces a challenge in maintaining the high profile it has enjoyed over the last year, mainly thanks to their World Cup performances. Although they officially have ODI status, attendances at home matches in 2007 were poor and the ICU has yet to sign a TV deal.
