He commenced his cricket in Brisbane with Northern Suburbs, having previously played in Cairns. He represented Queensland Under 17 in 1990-91 and Queensland Under 19 in 1991-92 and 1992-93, being captain in both years. He has since represented Queensland Colts, Queensland Academy of Sport and Queensland Second XI and made his first class debut for Queensland in 1994-95. He made two appearances for Australia in One Day Internationals. He began the season of 2000-01 as captain of the Queensland team for the August matches against each of Australia and New Zealand and in September captained Country Origin in the match played at Warwick. Schools - Convent School; St Augustines College, both in Cairns; Nudgee College. His father, Warren George MAHER, is a former Cairns representative cricketer and has been President of the North Queensland Cricket Alliance and has been a vice-President of the Queensland Country Cricket Association since July 1993.
