Kallis has turned down an offer from Glamorgan, who had hoped he would return after a successful season in 1999. He has decided to stay at home to prepare for the 2003 World Cup, which will be held in his home country.

Kallis, 26, who spent a season at Middlesex in 1997, says he has no intention of emulating his team-mate Shaun Pollock, who is to play for Warwickshire.

"I know Shaun set a precedent by signing for Warwickshire but, to be honest, I'm not up for it. Good luck to Shaun but I reckon he'll be very, very tired at the end of it," Kallis said.

"Glamorgan approached me and asked whether I would be available because there is no international cricket but I had to say no. I want to be fresh ahead of the World Cup."

"I would love to go back to Glamorgan because I loved playing for them and made some great friends there but I asked them to keep me in mind and give me a ring after the World Cup."
