Lots To Play For In 'A' Team Clash

With the squad for England already selected, most of the West Indies 'A' cricketers will be looking to embarrass the selectors and stake early claims for a plane ticket to Australia later this year.

On the other hand, the match, starting today at Kensington Oval, holds more immediate significance for Pakistan.

For the visitors it will be a dress rehearsal for the crucial second Test against the West Indies at the same venue.

All eyes will be on Shoaib Akhtar. He brings genuine pace and hostility to complement the swing capabilities of Wasim Akram and the natural aggression and experience of Waqar Younis.

The Pakistani selectors have several options for the Test match but their eventual decision could depend on how convincing a performance Shoaib puts up against the 'A' team.

Pakistan's top order has looked quite vulnerable, with only Inzamam-Ul-Haq being convincing on tour so far.

Fitness is also a major concern where young Barbadian pacer Corey Collymore is concerned. The West Indies selectors took the bold step of including him in the touring party to England and this will be his opportunity to justify the confidence placed in him.

Having missed out on the two home series and the tour to England, wicketkeeper Courtney Browne will captain the 'A' team for the third time this season. He will be keen to make a strong statement.
