Australia's chances of winning their Test series against the West Indies suffered a severe setback when fast bowler Craig McDermott tore ligaments in his left ankle in a training accident in Georgetown, Guyana.
McDermott has been sent home for treatment and will be out of action for between three and four weeks, which will rule him out of the first two Tests of the four-match series, in Barbados from March 31-April 5 and in Antigua from April 8-13. McDermott, 29, has played in 65 Tests, taking 270 wickets.
Jack Edwards, team manager, said he would wait a day or two while the injury is assessed before deciding whether to call for a replacement. The Australians have already had to replace one fast bowler in their squad of 15. Damien Fleming flew home last week with an injury to his right, bowling shoulder and left-armer Brendon Julian took his place.
