Devon's Nick Folland confirmed his place as the all-time leading runscorer in the Minor Counties one-day competition - now known as the ECB 38-County Cup - with a match winning century against the Somerset Bord XI at Sidmouth. Folland, who began the season with 1,502 KO Cup runs to his name, added another 107 as Devon easily defeated their near neighbours by 110 runs in a Group One game. Spinners Richard Dawson (five for 16) and Ryan Horrell (five for 22) shared all 10 wickets as Somerset collapsed from 66 without loss to 128 all out.
John Emburey, the former Middlesex and England spinner, and No. 11 batsman Jamie Barrow both hit sixes in the final over as Berkshire squeezed home by one wicket against the Sussex Board at Thatcham, but there were defeats for both Hertfordshire and Buckinghamshire, who lost to the Middlesex and Kent Boards respectively.
In the championship, no play was possible on day one at Wellington in the game between Shropshire and Wiltshire, but Bedfordshire's first ever championship fixture at Flitwick beat the weather as Northumberland took a narrow 4-3 lead on first innings points. Steve Foster, the captain of the England Board XI, hit an unbeaten 74 for Northumberland.
