West Indies' captain Jason Holder won the toss and elected to bat first, but his decision backfired as Shami drew first blood in just the fifth over of the match, when he dismissed opener Dwayne Smith for just six.

Shami added to his tally and accounted for the dangerous Chris Gayle in the ninth over. Gayle, who hit the World Cup's highest individual score of 215 against Zimbabwe last week, had earlier offered up two difficult chances before he pulled Shami straight to Mohit Sharma. He was also guilty of running out Marlon Samuels for two.

India's bowlers, led by Shami, refused to let West Indies' batsmen settle and continued to test them. At the half-way stage, West Indies stood at 85 for the loss of seven wickets.

Shami then returned for his second spell and dismissed Darren Sammy for 26. Holder was the only West Indies batsman to find runs and scored 57 from 64 balls. He helped them post 182.

India lost its openers, Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan, in the first seven overs for just 20. Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane added 43 for the third wicket, before Kohli departed.

India's middle-order got starts and it was eventually left to captain MS Dhoni to steer his side home. Dhoni and Ashwin did so in the 40th over.

"I think it was a difficult wicket, even initially with the new ball. There was some variable bounce, it was doing a bit. It settled down later, there was some swing for the West Indies bowlers as well, with the new ball. Our bowlers didn't try too much, they stuck to their line and length, it had a bit more bounce, gave quite a few wides bowling bouncers, but we also got wickets with the bouncer, so very happy with our performance," Dhoni said.
