St George`s Grenada Jan 02 CANA - West Indies wicketkeeper/batsman Junior Murray has been voted cricketer of the year by the Grenada Cricket Association (GCA).
The 28 year-old right-hand batsman, who is presently on tour with the West Indies in Australia, won the award over West Indies "A" team leg-spinner Rawle Lewis, and Windward Islands players Dennison Thomas and John and Kester Sylvester.
Murray made his Test debut against Australia in 1993 and has played 24 Tests, batting in 31 innings, scoring 712 runs including his highest of 101 not out against New Zealand and averaged 25.43, before the Australian tour.
He also had 86 catches and two stumpings behind the wicket.
He was also instrumental in West Indies two recent victories against Pakistan in the triangular One-Day series where he scored 86 off 78 balls in the West Indies` seven-wicket win and made a second innings knock of 53 in his team`s six-wicket victory over Australia in the Test series.
However, Murray will not be here for the award which coincides with the National Sport Award Ceremony scheduled for January 11.
He is tipped to win the overall male sports personality of the year award. Murray has won the award for the past three years. MB/CANA
