Nicol, Wagner take top honours

Canterbury allrounder Rob Nicol has been named New Zealand domestic cricket's overall most valuable player (MVP) of the season, while Otago fast bowler Neil Wagner has claimed the title for the four-day competition.

Nicol topped the season's one-day run-scorers' list with 648 runs at 72.00, as well as the Twenty20 table with 285 runs at 31.66. He was handy with the ball too, picking up 15 wickets with his offspin in the one-day tournament to finish third on the aggregate wickets table.

Earlier in the season, Nicol had picked up the MVP award for the one-day tournament, and finished in fourth spot in the twenty20 standings. He did not fair as well in the Plunket Shield, aggregating 449 at 32.07, but he was able to hold off a late challenge for the overall MVP title from Wagner.

Wagner picked up 51 wickets at an average of 18.15 in the four-day competition. The highlight of his season came when he snagged a record five wickets in one over in the final round of the competition against Wellington.

Canterbury had won the Plunket Shield this season, while Otago were runners-up.
