Richard Stemp will be reported to the TCCB for misconduct following an incident yesterday at Bradford on the final day of Yorkshire v Somerset County Championship game. Stemp was fielding at point when an appeal for a catch at the wicket was given not out by Umpires Constant and White because (reportedly) of doubt as to whether it carried. Stemp made "comments" to the bastman Lathwell, for which he is being reported. I understand this was only the second ball of the day, in which Somerset were defending a required 4th day total of 360 or so. Lathwell went on to contribute healthily to a day which ended with Somerset on 224-4 Stemp got only 1 wicket - a poor return for a left arm spinner on the 4th day - that being Lathwell's, bowled.
====> MORE Richard Stemp has been assured that his chances of playing for England on Thursday would not be affected by a flare-up at Bradford. The Yorkshire spinner did his image no good at all after allegedly swearing when a decision did not go his way in Monday's championship match against Somerset. Stemp was in line to win his first cap and England captain Keith Fletcher said nothing had changed. He went on: "We don't know any of the facts and we're concentrating on getting him right for the Test."
New Zealand have called up 29-year old Stuart Roberts as a replacement for injured paceman Danny Morrison. The medium pacer is currently coaching in Holland and will not arrive in England in time for Thursday's second Test. Roberts is not a complete stranger to international cricket having played two one-day matches for New Zealand in the past. Morrison learnt on Monday that his tour had been ended by a persistent hamstring injury.
