Ngam, who toured the West Indies with the South African A team in August and September, has in the squad as standby for Allan Donald who is suffering from "a couple of niggles", according to selection convener Rushdi Magiet.

The most serious of these niggles is a stomach muscle strain which restricted Donald to only seven overs in the New Zealand second innings in Port Elizabeth on Sunday.

Magiet made it clear that Ngam will only play at the Wanderers if it is decided that Donald was unfit. He said that there was no thought of fielding Ngam instead of, for instance, the spinner.

The squad is: Gary Kirsten, Boeta Dippenaar, Jacques Kallis, Daryll Cullinan, Neil McKenzie, Mark Boucher, Lance Klusener, Nicky Boje, Shaun Pollock (capt), Allan Donald, Makhaya Ntini, Mfuneko Ngam.
