It will be of little consolation to the man who ends up on top but whose side loses the Ashes - if it does not finish a 1-1 draw - but the fact is Strauss and Clarke have been head and shoulders above the rest of their team.

Strauss got caught up in the disaster that engulfed the England batsmen at Headingley but he has been in great form, an excellent effort considering the pressure on his shoulders. Bet365 now make him 1/8 to go on to finish on top of the pile for England, and considering he is more than 100 runs clear, he really should.

Matt Prior, who has enjoyed a superb series to date and is next in the list, is 9/1, while Paul Collingwood, who missed out at Edgbaston and Headingley, is next at 14/1 and the other opener, Alastair Cook, is 16/1.

Clarke the classiest of all
Michael Clarke has been Australia's outstanding batsman of the series so far and those of you who took the 5/1 on offer at the start of the series will be feeling pretty happy right now.

Clarke has scored 445 runs so far, more than 100 clear of the rest, and shows no sign of letting up yet. His footwork against Graeme Swann was exemplary and if he continues to bat like that he will end up a mile clear, whatever the rest do.

Clarke is 1/8 with bet365, while Marcus North, a real find for the Aussies in this series, even if he is not the most exciting of batsmen, is 15/2, though he will need a massive innings seeing as he is 106 behind Clarke.

Captain Ricky Ponting, who is another 38 runs behind, is 8/1, testament to his ability as much as anything, for he has a long way to climb to get to the top this time round.
