As Australia's players relax and enjoy a rare period of inactivity before the tour of England kicks off in mid June, Ricky Ponting has warned his quick bowlers not to take things too easy.

A report in today's Australian says that Ponting is worried that the long lay-off might lead to an increased risk of injury when players resume training, and so he has ordered his bowlers to have regular net sessions to maintain a level of fitness.

"I will be encouraging these guys to do some bowling through their break," Ponting told the paper. "As Glenn [McGrath] has said before, it's when they have a long break and start working back into their bowling that they're most likely to get injured. That's what I'm more worried about and I hope everyone gives themselves the best chance [of staying fit]."

Brett Lee, who has struggled with injury and form, has hinted that he might consider a short spell in county cricket ahead of the Ashes to get him in shape. "It's a decision for him," Ponting said, "and if he thinks that's the best for his cricket then I think he should go ahead and do that." The other bowlers will undergo a regime planned by the team's fitness advisor and physiotherapists.

The batsmen are set for a less stressful few weeks, with Ponting encouraging them to put their feet up.
