A gentle and down-to-earth person, Butt was born in Lahore in 1930 and represented Northern Punjab, Services, Bahawalpur, Rawalpindi and Punjab University. Hanif Mohammad, who played alongside Butt, remembered him as a wonderful person.
"He was full of life but very serious when it came to cricket. He had a pleasing personality that attracted everyone. His death is a great loss to the country and for me, in particular because he was someone with whom I was very close."
