Irfan Pathan has signed for Middlesex as cover for Nantie Hayward, the South Africa fast bowler, who is expected to be out for around six weeks with a groin injury.
Pathan, 20, joins a county for the first time, after playing 13 Tests and 29 ODIs since making his debut against Australia in 2003. He has recently been named in the initial squad for the Super Series in Australia during October.
John Emburey, the Middlesex coach, told the Press Association: "We are delighted to have signed a world-class bowler in Irfan as replacement. He will be a major addition to the side."
Pathan's left-arm swing will bring an extra dimension to the Middlesex attack and his attacking batting will also add some valuable strength to the tail. He could make his debut was early as Tuesday, in the C&G Trophy, against Northamptonshire at Lord's and potentially play in three County Championship matches. He may also be around for the beginning of the Twenty20 tournament towards the end of June.
