Patriots set to down Jets

The New England Patriots may have already clinched their place in the play-offs as divisional champions of the AFC East but the franchise that has won three of the past four Superbowls knows everything about this time of the season. Having stuttered through the first half of the season, thanks largely to a succession of injuries and also changes in offensive and defensive co-ordinators, the Patriots have now won three on the bounce and are slowly but surely moving into contention for the biggest prize again.

Bill Belichick's side, led by the ever-impressive Tom Brady, are past-masters at getting the job done even when they are not at their best and there have been signs in recent weeks that they are getting their consistency back. That spells trouble for the other teams and the likes of the Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks - two teams who meet this weekend but who've dominated their divisions - must be looking over their shoulder at what's happening in New England.

Though they have already qualified for the play-offs, the Patriots are unlikely to rest their big names as momentum is a massive thing when it comes to the knock-out stages and, without home advantage throughout, they need to be winning matches going into what could be a massive game against the Colts, should they make it through to what is effectively a semi-final. For the New York Jets, it is a season they would sooner forget. With 11 defeats from their 14 games, it is their offence that has let them down most of all, with the team scoring 20 points or more on only four occasions. Injuries and big problems at quarter-back have been the main cause of that, and it's almost impossible to see them making much of an impression on the New England defence on Boxing Day.

If Brady plays, and I have no reason to think he won't at least start, then the Patriots will surely win, even if the Jets will have the home advantage. bet365 make them a 9/10 (1.90) chance, giving up just five points, and that looks easily manageable to me.
