Fast bowler Umar Gul claimed three wickets in five balls in his first over with the second new ball to inspire Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) to a thumping innings and 161 run victory over Karachi Blues with a day to spare in the QEA Trophy 4th round match at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi on Friday.
Umar accounted for Khalid Latif, Kamran Ali and Wajid Ali on the second, fifth and sixth balls as Karachi Blues, after being forced to follow-on, were reduced to one for three and later one for four. Karachi, who had started the day at 155 for five and were dismissed for 165 in reply to PIA's 460 for nine declared, were eventually dismissed for 134 despite a fighting 52 by Sharjeel Ashraf.
Umar, who had figures of three for 32 in the first innings, finished with four for 49 to take his tally of wickets to 26 in the competition. Off-spinner Shoaib Malik scooped up three for 37. For PIA, it was third successive victory by an innings margin.
Earlier, Khalid Latif added just one run to his overnight score of 91 as Najaf Shah demolished Karachi Blues with figures of five for 31.
Paceman Yasir Arafat and Mohammad Asif combined to bowl KRL to a cakewalk innings and 55 run victory over Rawalpindi at the Pindi Cricket Stadium. Yasir picked up five wickets for 57 runs for match figures of eight for 107 while Asif bagged four for 48 as the home team was dismissed for 197 runs in the second innings after resuming their second innings at 13 for one.
For Rawalpindi, opener Babar Naeem was the top scorer with 47 while Junaid Zia completed a good all-round performance by hitting 46 off 64 balls. He had earlier contributed 32 runs and then claimed five for 78 in KRL's 410 for eight declared.
Allied Bank Limited (ABL), at the Asghar Ali Shah Stadium in Karachi, completed the formality against Dadu when they won by an innings and 425 runs. Dadu, starting their second innings at 33 for four, were bowled out for 73 with Mohammad Zahid bagging four for 17 and Arshad Khan claiming four for 29.
It was Allied Bank's fourth straight victory and guarantees them a place in the quarterfinals.
At the Arbab Niaz Stadium, ZTBL defeated Peshawar by 281 runs. Set a victory target of 394, the home team was skittled out for 113 with paceman Fahad Masood bagging five for 16 and Mubashir Nazir taking four for 23. ZTBL, starting the day at 115 for two with a first innings lead of 96 runs in the bag, were dismissed for 297 with Zahoor Elahi top scoring with 84 - an innings that came off 120 balls and included nine fours.
Karachi Whites earned a 89-run first innings lead against Multan at the UBL Sports Complex and had extended the advantage to 180 when they finished the day at 91 for one. Spin duo of Arif Mahmood and Tahir Khan squally shared eight wickets between them as Multan, while replying to Karachi's 376, were bowled out for 287 after starting the day at 107 for four.
After two full days of play were lost at Muridke and Faisalabad, only 13 overs were possible at the Lahore Country Club with Gujranwala reaching 54 for two against Sheikhupura and 55.4 overs were bowled at Iqbal Stadium in which the home team was dismissed for 163 with Wapda off-spinner Aqeel Ahmad snapping up five for 46. At the Gaddafi Stadium, 285 minutes were lost due to fog while at the adjacent LCCA ground, only 33.5 overs were bowled with Customs declaring their first innings at 309 for five and Lahore Blues closing the day at 88 for two. At the Sports Stadium in Sargodha, only 31 overs were possible in which the home were dismissed for 174 by Lahore Blues after resuming this morning at 74 for four.
