4.50 pm J&K's Parvez Rassol takes seven

Assam have collapsed in Guwahati. They were 126 for 2 in pursuit of J&K's 323, but allrounder Parvez Rassol's offspinners have bundled them out for 165. Rassol took 7 for 41, easily his best figures. He had a first-class bowling average of 56.16 coming into this game. A few years ago, Rassol, still only 23, had made the headlines for something completely different from cricket.

4.45 pm Mumbai take a 96-run lead

After Kerala opener V Jagadeesh was stranded on 199 earlier, Bengal's Arindam Das has carried his bat to make 98 against Mumbai. Ankeet Chavan's four wickets have ended the Bengal innings on 201, well short of Mumbai's 297.

4.40 pm Hundred on a difficult pitch for Alam

Uttar Pradesh's Arish Alam has reached his second first-class hundred on a green wicket in Kanpur, which has aided movement through the game. There has been lots of bounce too, high as well as low, but Alam has taken UP to 299 for 6 v Baroda's 254.

4.30 Tamil Nadu crawl past 400

In Nagpur, Tamil Nadu have now batted nearly two days to make 408 for 8 against Vidarbha. Shrikant Wagh has taken 4 for 99, Badrinath out for 192. to me, TN typify Indian first-class cricket. From the first ball, bat with the intention of taking the first-innings lead. I'll run for cover if Vidarbha collapse twice in the remaining two days.

4.25 pm Delhi lose Bhatia

In Lahli, Rohtak, Haryana captain Amit Mishra has bowled allrounder Rajat Bhatia, and Delhi are on 118 for 4. Unmukt Chand is batting on 42. Haryana made 307.

4.20 pm Strong reply from Odisha

Hosts Odisha have motored to 227 for 3 in Sambalpur in reply to Maharashtra's 315. The Beheras are at it again. Natraj, the captain, made 60 and Niranjan is batting on 55.

4.15 pm Gujarat make 566

Gujarat have been bowled out in Valsad against Hyderabad, after centuries from Parthiv Patel and Manprit Juneja.

4.10 pm Mumbai set to take big lead

Our man Sid Talya: "Ankeet Chavan takes four, landed on a length and Veer Pratap Singh pushed it straight back to him. Bengal are 168 for 8. Arindam Das is fighting, still, on 68."

4 pm UP take the lead in Kanpur

The second new ball claimed Mohammad Kaif, but not before he made a fighting 83. Arish Alam still there on 85, and UP on 276 for 5 against Baroda's 254.

3.45 pm Jadeja gets third first-class triple

He is the first Indian to do so, and only the eighth ever in first-class cricket. He joins Bradman, Ponsford, Hammond, Grace, Hick, Lara, and M Hussey. Laxman and Jaffer have two in first-class cricket, Sehwag has two in Tests. But Jadeja is alone at the top right now. If this does not change the kind of perception people have of him, nothing ever will.

3.40 pm Badri goes for 192

Badrinath has fallen eight short of a double in Nagpur, where Tamil Nadu have plodded to 382 for 7 against Vidarbha.

3.35 Delhi bruised and battling in Lahli

Unmukt Chand retired after taking a blow to the elbow and has come back to bat. It is Mithun Manhas who has had to go off now, with a back spasm. Harshal Patel has taken two wickets, and Delhi are 88 for 3 against Haryana.

3.30 pm Mumbai all over Bengal now

Our man Sid Talya reports from the CCI: "Bengal have lost their sixth. Avishkar Savli got one to nip away and Jhunjhunwala tried to play it off the back foot. Got a thick edge and was snapped up at first slip. Bengal are 150 for 6, still 147 behind. Arindam Das is still batting on 55. Laxmi Shukla, the man with the five-for in the Mumbai innings, walks in."

3.20 pm Juneja gets to his century after Parthiv

Gujarat are on 526 for 5 against Hyderabad in Valsad. This is 22-year old Manprit Juneja's fourth hundred in seven first-class games.

3.15 pm Rajasthan quicks run through Punjab

Led by Pankaj Singh, who has taken his 16th first-class five-for in 65 games, Rajasthan have dismissed Punjab for 215, for a small lead of seven. Aniket Choudhary has picked up three, Rituraj Singh has taken two. Ravi Inder Singh top-scored with 85, but no one else made a fifty.

3.05 pm Mumbai keep striking at the CCI

Sid Talya is not impressed: "The Bengal batsmen are being let-off but they insist on getting out. Subhomoy Das departs the very next delivery after he is dropped. He was put down by Hiken Shah at second slip off Ankeet Chavan, but kept prodding outside off and edged the next one to first slip where Wasim Jaffer made no mistake. Bengal are 132 for 5 in 44 overs."

2.45 pm Jadeja goes to tea on 279

If he gets 21 more, Ravindra Jadeja will become the first man, I repeat, the first man to make three triple centuries in the Ranji Trophy. VVS Laxman has two, so does Wasim Jaffer. Only seven batsmen have achieved the feat before in first-class cricket. Saurashtra are 464 for 6, the next-highest score is Shitanshu Kotak's 68. Staggering, plain simple staggering. Someone check if he is human.

2.40 pm Century for Parthiv

Parthiv Patel has fallen for 111 in Valsad, but Manprit Juneja is still there on 79, and Gujarat are 488 for 5 against Hyderabad. Breezy knock from Parthiv, he faced 144 deliveries and hit 14 fours.

2.30 pm Another triple for Jadeja?

The man is unstoppable. He is batting on 267 off 425 deliveries in Rajkot, where Saurashtra have reached 449 for 6. Kamlesh Makvana supporting Jadeja on 48.

2.20 pm Stranded on 199

V Jagadeesh, the Kerala opener, has been left stranded on 199 against Services in Delhi. Last man Sandeep Warrier survived 17 deliveries before going caught behind off his 18th. Jagadeesh has been using team-mate Sachin Baby's bat, and has batted nearly ten hours and 384 deliveries with it. Kerala 314, Jagadeesh making nearly two-thirds of those runs.

2.15 pm Saha goes for a duck ...

... after getting bowled off a no-ball at the CCI. Sid Talya has more: "An offspinner’s delight. Ramesh Powar tossed it up outside off and Saha tried to drive it through the covers. It turned in to beat him through the gate and hit off and middle. But the umpire wanted to double-check if it was a no-ball, and after a nearly 10-minute delay it was ruled a no-ball. Saha got a life, but what happens next? He offers a catch to forward short leg. Powar got that one to jump as it turned in, and it caught Saha's gloves. Both Tiwary and Saha have had reprieves, and both failed to cash in. Bengal are 93 for 4." Mumbai made 297.

2.10 pm Group C update

In Nadaun, Himachal Pradesh, Tripura have made 441, and also taken an early wicket. Himachal 12 for 1. This is only the fifth time Tripura have made more than 400 in an innings.

2.05 pm Monkeys on the field in Kanpur

Green Park has been invaded by monkeys. At least eight of them surrounding a Baroda fielder in the deep, lest he play a role in breaking the growing partnership between Uttar Pradesh's Mohammad Kaif and Arish Alam. UP 184 for 4. Exact monkey count unavailable. One of them spotted walking off the field. Don't you come back and ask to bowl soon.

2 pm Update from the far east

Tea has been taken some time back in Guwahati, where they start an hour earlier than the rest of the country. Assam are 108 for 2, captain Dheeraj Jadhav leading with an unbeaten 60. J&K made 323.

1.50 pm Manoj Tiwary falls in Mumbai

The Bengal captain has given it away at the CCI. Bengal 92 for 3, Tiwary gone for 39. Sid Talya has this for us: "Manoj Tiwary is gone. He had a reprieve earlier, after which he immediately counterattacked. Chavan was punched through cover for a boundary. The next delivery was flighted, and landed on a length. Tiwary intended to chip it over mid-off but found Avishkar Salvi there. An easy catch. He’s gone for 39 off 64 balls. Wriddhiman Saha is the new man. The first innings has not been a rewarding one for either Rohit or Tiwary."

1.45 pm Badri in control in Nagpur

Badrinath has reached 167 against Vidarbha, and Tamil Nadu are 334 for 4.

1.40 pm Punjab recover against Rajasthan

In Mohali, Ravi Inder Singh (74*) and Gurkeerat Singh (39*) have helped Punjab recover from 87 for 4. They are now only 47 behind Rajasthan at 175 for 4. Gurkeerat had a few noticeable cameos for Kings XI Punjab last IPL and had said then he wanted to play Ranji Trophy. This is his second first-class game.

1.35 pm Update from the CCI

Sid Talya writes in: "Manoj Tiwary is living dangerously, the first ball of Ankeet Chavan’s spell he drove uppishly towards Rohit Sharma at extra cover but it fell just short. The next ball, one that turned away, he edged to slip and Wasim Jaffer failed to hold on to a straightforward chance. The third ball was flighted generously and Tiwary took the bait, lofting Chavan over the long-on boundary. He almost achieved the same result next ball, which was a one-bounce four. An eventful first over from Chavan. Tiwary survives. He was on 23 when dropped. Bengal 82 for 2."

1.20 pm Odisha lose their captain

Odisha have lost Natraj Behera for a breezy 60. They are 130 for 2 in reply to Maharashtra's 315 in Sambalpur.

1.05 pm Jadeja makes another double

Ravindra Jadeja has reached one more double ton in Rajkot. It is the seventh time he has gone past 100 in first-class cricket, and when he does, he usually goes on and on. Here is his list of hundreds - 232*, 143, 122*, 170*, 314, 303*, and now 205*. Saurashtra 359 for 6 v Railways. His average has gone up to nearly 52 now, ten runs more than Suresh Raina's. Of course, he plays most of his games on the batting paradise that is the Rajkot pitch, but that is also where Cheteshwar Pujara has made most of his runs. I think it is time we look at Ravindra Jadeja as more than a bits-and-pieces cricketer restricted to a side role in limited-overs games.

1 pm Delhi wobble in Lahli

Delhi have lost Shikhar Dhawan to Haryana's Mohit Sharma in Lahli, Rohtak. Mohit has already caused Unmukt Chand to retire hurt with a blow to the elbow. Delhi 16 for 2, Haryana 307

12 noon Lunch update

At the CCI, Bengal are 41 for 2 in reply to Mumbai's 297. Manoj Tiwary 12* Our man Sid Talya writes in: "Tiwary has had a shaky start: he's been beaten a few times, got a leading edge that just landed wide of extra cover and had a big shout for lbw off Kshemal Waingankar when the ball kept low. The last ball before lunch, he drove through square leg for four."

One thing about Tiwary is, even when he is deep into an innings, he somehow never gives the impression of being in full control. That is the way he bats. His way has brought him 17 first-class hundreds at an average just under 60.

Defending champions Rajasthan have hit back against Punjab in Mohali. Pankaj Singh, yet again, is among the wickets. Wonder what he needs to do to get an India call-up. Punjab 115 for 4

In Valsad in south Gujarat, the hosts have lost four wickets, but Parthiv Patel is there on 62. Gujarat 360 for 4 v Hyderabad

In Rajkot, Ravindra Jadeja is eight away from another first-class double hundred. He's already got a triple this season, and a six-for. Saurashtra 342 for 6 v Railways

Siddhartha Sharma of the Indian Express tells me that India Under-19 captain Unmukt Chand has retired hurt after being hit on the elbow in the opening over of Delhi's innings by Mohit Sharma. Harshal Patel has taken a wicket in his first over, and Delhi are 7 for 1 after Haryana made 307.

In Kanpur, Mohammad Kaif is battling it out after UP lost four wickets in the morning against Baroda. The Green Park pitch has been nearly as green as the rest of the outfield. Kaif's been hit on the glove, he's been beaten, he's been dropped in the slips, he's looked ugly, but he's still there, on 29 off 73, and UP are 124 for 4.

11.40 am Awana takes five, Haryana make 307

In Lahli, Rohtak, Parvinder Awana has ended with 5 for 71, his seventh five-for in his 40th first-class game. Haryana have been dismissed for 307, with young quick Harshal Patel making an unbeaten 39 in his first game of the season.

11.35 am Badrinath carries on

Slow progress for Tamil Nadu in Nagpur. S Badrinath has reached 119 against Vidarbha, and TN are 263 for 4, having lost India Under-19 allrounder Baba Aparajith for 13.

11.30 am Manoj Tiwary in to bat in Mumbai

"Tiwary walks in. Writam Porel was caught at third slip as he tried to drive Dhawal Kulkarni. Bengal are 20 for 2 in the ninth over. Tiwary's been beaten first ball. Four slips, a gully and a backward short leg for him," writes our man Sid Talya from Brabourne Stadium.

Odds on Tiwary to outdo his India competitor. Rohit Sharma made 1 in Mumbai's first innings.

Our man Sid Talya writes: "Rohan Banerjee took a chance against Ramesh Powar, who was made to run from mid-on as Arindam Das played the ball through midwicket. Das settled for two but Banerjee was pressing for the third, he was made to turn back and run to the non-striker's end but Powar returned a good throw to the bowler Avishkar Salvi. Bengal are 17 for 1." This is for all those who think fat men can't run. Not only can they do that, they can even cause run-outs. More power to Powar.

11 am Odisha 40 for 1, Maharashtra make 315

Just like Mumbai's lower order folded in minutes after resisting for some hours, Maharashtra have gone from 314 for 7 to 315 all out in Sambalpur. Shrikant Mundhe was unbeaten on 39, and came back to strike in his third over

Parwinder Awana has picked up four wickets in Lahli, Rohtak. Left-arm spinner Vikas Mishra has two and Haryana have unravelled after being 119 for 1.

UP captain Raina is gone in Kanpur, getting a leading edge to mid-on as he tried to work a pitched-up delivery to the leg side. The bright side, it wasn't a bouncer. UP 78 for 3 in pursuit of Baroda's 254

10.40 am Five for Shukla, Mumbai dismissed for 297

"The last three have fallen for four runs. Powar was bowled charging out to Laxmi Shukla, tried to defend, got an inside edge," Sid Talya tells us about the demise of the Mumbai lower order. Of course, they have fought, as they usually do, thirties from Ankeet Chavan and Dhawal Kulkarni. And a completely out-of-character 17 off 73 deliveries for Ramesh Powar.

Sid Talya writes: "Left-arm spinner Iresh Saxena strikes twice in the same over! Dhawal Kulkarni drove the second ball of Saxena's first over today to extra cover. A handy partnership between Kulkarni and Ramesh Powar, worth 45. Kulkarni fell for 37, Powar is on 17. Kshemal Waingankar is caught at mid-off as he tries to go over the top."

At Green Park, Kanpur, UP captain Raina is in at No. 4, after Baroda removed the openers cheaply after having made 254 on day one. And the second ball he gets is short, rises at his throat, Raina shows it the back of his head and his glove, and somehow manages to survive. Could have been hit badly. UP 45 for 2

10.05 am A pitch made of stone

The Vidarbha Cricket Association has listened to former India legspinner and selector Narendra Hirwani's words and has built a playing surface out of Kota stone, according to Khurram Habib of the Hindustan Times. Hirwani has been in favour of such pitches, which don't aid turn at all. He believes domestic spinners need to practise on stone wickets to learn how to give the ball a rip, rather than floating it up and letting helpful turners do everything. Aye, he knows something about spin bowling does Hirwani, the man took 732 first-class wickets.

9.50 am Sunday morning in Mumbai

Our man Sid Talya is living the good life: "Pleasant morning, a very light breeze blowing. The cafe alongside the ground at the CCI was full a short while ago, members having tea and breakfast. Plenty of room at the Stadium restaurant next to Churchgate station. An adda for journalists, and others, for a bite during a game at the CCI or Wankhede." Imagine a restaurant called Stadium right between two stadiums. Even has something for us (Sid Talya asks to be excluded) vegetarians such as me.

9.45 am Maharashtra lower order fights

In Sambalpur, Shrikant Mundhe and Akshay Darekar have added 59, and Maharashtra have reached 309 for 7 against hosts Odisha.

9.35 am Rajasthan strike early

Up north in Mohali, Punjab have lost Karan Goel in the fourth over of the day, in pursuit of the 222 made by defending champions Rajasthan. They are 34 for 2 at the moment.

9.30 am Day two begins ...

Hello, hello. We are back to bring you the action from day two of the latest round of the Ranji Trophy. Our man Siddhartha Talya has made his way to the Cricket Club of India in south Mumbai, and he tells me that there was light applause as Mumbai's Ramesh Powar and Dhawal Kulkarni walked out to face the Bengal bowlers.
