Barbadian Floyd Reifer received a call-up to the West Indies team yesterday after Jimmy Adams was ruled out of the South African tour.
Adams sliced open a finger on his right hand with a bread knife during the team's flight to South Africa on Monday. The wound was stitched but when Adams visited a doctor yesterday morning, it was discovered he had severed two tendons.
"He will be out for six weeks," team manager Clive Lloyd said.
Reifer, 26, who is with the West Indies "A" team in Bangladesh, will join the senior side in Johannesburg on Saturday, the West Indies Cricket Board said.
Chris Gayle of Jamaica will be joining the "A" team in India on Sunday as Reifer's replacement.
