Retraction: Zimbabwe players' payments

There was a reporting error in our article yesterday entitled "Zimbabwe players 'robbed' of World Cup cash". In drawing from a Times article of the same date, we originally misrepresented the role of the Zimbabwe-based CFX financial services group.

The CFX Cricket Academy in Harare is Zimbabwe's foremost development facility, sponsoring young players from all sectors of the community and nurturing new talent in support of Zimbabwean cricket, both locally and internationally.

In yesterday's article, a 19% reduction in World Cup player fees was incorrectly reported as a charge levied by CFX. The reduction was in fact a contractual adjustment linking players' income to the total World Cup revenues received by the Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU). ZCU revenue was lower than projected, which in turn affected the players' revenue.

The CFX group provides banking facilities to many of the country's international cricketers. The enforcement of an exchange rate that resulted in lower-than-expected payments to players was the result of Zimbabwe government actions and not those of CFX.

Wisden CricInfo regrets this reporting error and apologises to the shareholders and directors of the CFX group for any embarrassment or inconvenience caused.
