"Sachin's presence definitely makes a big difference," said Chappell before the India Seniors side began their practice session. "He is extremely respected, talented and we all welcome him back for the start of another successful phase in his career. It's hard when you have injuries but he still has the passion and desire to do it. We're hoping we can manage him through the tournament as far as his injury goes since he is important for India not only for now but for the next few years."
Chappell added that this would be an ideal chance to prepare for the tough home series against Sri Lanka and South Africa, which includes 12 one-dayers. "It will be my first series in India and I'm looking forward to it. We hope to have the team in the right frame of mind ahead of the two series. India have a very good record at home and we will try to maintain that fine record."
This kind of tournament, according to Chappell, was an opportunity for all players with the seniors getting back into the groove and the juniors gaining tremendous experience both on and off the field. "It's a wonderful opportunity," he said, "the senior players can pick themselves up while the young players have a chance to play against world-class players. The younger players can also learn from the way the seniors prepare off the field and I think Sachin's presence is crucial in that regard. He can pass on his knowledge and experience to the youngsters."
He also spoke about the team constantly preparing for the World Cup in 2007 and hinted that senior players might be rested for certain tournaments to keep them in shape for the next two years. "2007 seems a long way away but we need to start looking at it seriously from now, taking into account injuries, form and other factors. I am not going to force any player to sit out of any tournament, but in the interest of the individual and team, it may be wise to rest a few players in the future. We need to use our resources wisely as it's easier for a youngster to come into an experienced side. Australia struggled in the '80s because they didn't bring in youngsters at the right time and we need to be careful in that regard."
