Seahawks out to keep on soaring

Those people who decide the scheduling in the NFL must like their Monday nights as the most exciting game of week 13 again looks to be the last one of all

Those people who decide the scheduling in the NFL must like their Monday nights as the most exciting game of week 13 again looks to be the last one of all. The Seattle Seahawks, riding high on 9 and 2, travel to Philadelphia to face a bruised Eagles side that, at 5 and 6, need to get winning fast if they're to claim a play-off spot.

With Donovan McNabb out injured and the brilliant yet difficult Terrell Owens having been discarded, the Eagles offence has been severely blunted and it's arguable if they have the firepower in their ranks to get to the play-offs. With the Giants, Rams, Cardinals and Redskins still to come in the regular season, the Eagles probably have to win four of their five games to get into the play-offs and, apart from the Indianapolis Colts, the Seahawks are probably the last side they would choose to face at the moment. Victory for Mike Holmgren's side on Monday would see the Seahawks wrap up their divisional title and take them into the play-offs, where they would be in a strong position to improve on what is a woeful post-season record.

Running back Shaun Alexander is having the season of his career, tearing through defences and averaging more than 121 rushing yards per game, while quarter-back Matt Hasselback has controlled the offence superbly. Despite a couple of close shaves in recent weeks - they probably should have lost to the New York Giants last weekend - they remain full of confidence and are finding a way to win even when they are not at their best.

In the absence of McNabb and Owens, the Eagles have begun to run the ball more, and with some success, as they saw off the deflated Green Bay Packers 19-14 last time out. Mike McMahon is not taking too many risks at quarter-back and it was notable that Brian Westbrook rushed for more than 100 yards against the Packers last week, his first 100-yard plus game since week four.

The last time these two met, Hasselback was intercepted three times as the Eagles clinched a 27-20 win, but that was three years ago and a lot has changed since then. Expect the Seahawks to control this one on the ground, opening it up for Hasselback to throw when required.
