T&T's 'Bowl' squad to be named today

By Shammi Kowlessar

THE national cricket team for next month's inaugural Red Stripe Bowl limited-overs Championships was selected yesterday but names will not be released until today.

The team was picked after the second of two weekend trial matches at Gilbert Park, California, which were both abandoned before lunch time because of rain.

In the 40 overs of play that were possible, Lara's X1 reached 187 for the loss of four wickets without the help of West Indies vice-captain Brian Lara, who did not bat.

National Under-19 skipper Daren Ganga led the way with a polished 63, which included seven fours, while other national players Lincoln Roberts and Andre Lawrence chipped in with 36 and 33 respectively and youth player Randy Baichan scored 29.

Dennis Rampersad, Ricardo Paty and West Indies "A" player Dinanath Ramnarine picked up a wicket apiece for Smith's X1. Even less play was possible Saturday when Smith's X1 amassed 97 for three in 26 overs. Rampersad, a former West Indies youth player, had top-scored with 27 while Imran Jan and skipper Richard Smith were undefeated on 23 and 19 respectively when play ended prematurely. The chosen squad will practice from 2 p.m. tomorrow until Thursday at Queen's Park Oval and go into camp at the Oval on Friday.

After the camp, which includes practice games over the weekend, the players will train next week Monday and Tuesday and leave on Thursday for the tournament following a rest day on Wednesday. T&T, who won the 50-overs tournament last year when it was known as the Shell Sandals competition, have been drawn in Group A in the first round along with the Windward Islands, newcomers Bermuda and hosts Jamaica. Group B will be contested in Guyana and involves Barbados, the Leeward Islands, debutants Canada and the hosts.

This country will tackle Bermuda and Jamaica next week Saturday and Sunday (October 4 and 5) respectively and face the Windwards on October 8.
