Simon Jones's recall into the England one-dcay squad didn't last long: he is to return home after Steve Harmison confirmed that he was close to full fitness and hopes to play in the third ODI of the current seven-match series against South Africa.

Jones, 26, was not originally selected in the one-day squad, but was added - along with Matthew Hoggard - after Andrew Flintoff went home for an operation on his heel and Harmison suffered a calf strain.

But now Harmison is almost fit again. He told Sky Sports: "I had a scan after the Test match. The diagnosis was that it was not any worse or any better, and we were told it would need ten days. It is progressing nicely, and with a bit of luck I will be fit for [Friday's match at] Port Elizabeth."

He explained how the problem had affected him when he bowled: "I just struggled for the first four or five balls - it was uncomfortable. But once I got loose and moving it was not too bad. It was worse in the field really - I was a bit of a lame duck out there."
