+ Ranatunga to retain captain`s job

Arjuna Ranatunga who led Sri Lanka to victory in the 1996 Wills World Cup is tipped to retain his position as captain for the four-nation Singer World Series to be played in Colombo later this year. Ranatunga, the only surviving member of Sri Lanka`s inaugural Test team of 1982,first captained the national team in 1988 in Asia Cup tournament in Bangladesh when regular skipper Ranjan Madugalle was injured. Since then Ranatunga has held the reins throughout but had several broken sequences.

+ Former Sri Lanka Test captain to take an ICC job?

A former Sri Lanka Test captain is likely to take up a full-time job as an International Cricket Council official, informed sources said. The former Lankan captain has been approached by the ICC due the his cordial relationship with the world governing body. He has also functioned as an official of the ICC before, but his new task would be very much greater than any of them, according to the same source.

Thee Associated Motorways Limited scored a comfortable 97-run victory over Ceylinco `A` in their Mercantile`B` Division cricket tournament fixture played at the MCA grounds. They compiled 206 from 49.4 overs and then dismissed the opposition for 109 runs.

+ Sri Lanka to retain World Cup squad?

Sri Lanka is expected to retain its 14-member victorious World Cup squad for the Singer World Series Limited over cricket championship to be held later this year. Informed sources said that the national selectors are unlikely to make any changes from the squad which won the Wills World Cup final, unless the team is hit by injury problems. Australia, India and Zimbabwe and the hosts Sri Lanka are scheduled to play in the four-nation championship to be worked off in August/ September.

+ Mercantile cricket final put back

The 1996 Mercantile cricket final, originally scheduled for June 29, has been put back to July 13 in order to accommodate the two weekends of postponed matches. The matches of May 25 and 26 will be played on the weekend of June 22 and 23 respectively, and the matches of June 1 and 2 will take place on June 29 and 30 respectively. The venues and matches remain unchanged. Joint defending champions, Union Assurance, who are placed second, are having a free weekend while unbeaten Hatton National Bank continued to head the standings.
