Maris Stella junior captain Mevan Fernando has shown a consistency both in school and club cricket in recent times. However, Fernando has been a surprise omission from the Sri Lanka Under-17 pool named for the forthcoming tour of Hong Kong.
Fernando has led the Maris Stella team in the Under-17 schools tourney with distinction with an average of 54.00. Playing for Maris Stella first X1 team in the 1998/99 season, he made a stylish 83 against Wesley last week.
Having made his club cricket debut at the tender age of 14, Fernando has been a key member of the Negombo CC team. In last year's Under-15 tournament, Fernando proved his class as a batsman with an average of 105.00. He was also adjudged the most outstanding player from Gampaha District at the Under-15 All-Island tournament.
