Sri Lanka to host Asia Cup
Sri Lanka will host the Asia Cup between July 15 and Aug 1
Sri Lanka will host the Asia Cup in July, according to a Sri Lanka board spokesman. Asian cricket officials agreed to play the tournament between July 15 and Aug 1 at a recent Asian Cricket Council (ACC) meeting.
"It was Pakistan's turn to host the tournament," said Mohan de Silva, the board secretary. "But we were able to convince ACC members that in the event of a sudden pull out by India the tournament would be devalued."
The Asia Cup had not been held for four years because of India's refusal to play Pakistan. But a recent thaw in diplomatic relations, and subsequent resumption of dialogue has changed the rigid stance.
India's participation generally guarantees greater viewer interest, and more finances. With India's involvement assured, the Sri Lanka cricket board expects to earn USD$1 million in participation and management fees.
Of the six previous Asia Cup tournaments, India has won three times, Sri Lanka, twice, and Pakistan, once.
