Sri Lanka `A` meets Pakistan `A` in decisive game

In-form batsmen Chaminda Mendis and Marvan Atapattu should play a key role when Sri Lanka `A` meets Pakistan `A` in a crucial Interface four-nation tournament match to be played in Sharjah on Sunday.

Sri Lanka `A` with a win against UAE and a defeat at the hands of India `A`, must win Sunday`s match with a good run rate if they are to book a place in Tuesday`s final. The play-off for the third place will take place on Tuesday.

Old Uvites SC,Badulla Hockey and Cricket Club emerge joint champs

Old Uvites SC and Badulla Hockey and Cricket Club emerged joint champions at the seven-a-side hockey tournament as heavy rain prevented the final being played at the Vincent Dias Stadium in Badulla. Ten teams participated at this tournament organised by the Uva Hockey Association which was conducted in two groups.

Old Uvites SC emerged champions in group `A` with BH and FC in second place. In Group `B`, Old Duthians SC secured the top berth followed by Maroons SC `A` team. In the first semifinal, BH and FC beat Old Duthians SC on a penalty tie-breaker after a goalless draw. In the other semifinal, Old Uvites SC scored an exciting 1 - 0 victory over the formidable Maroons SC `A` team. Due to heavy rain, the finals could not be played and the two teams were declared joint champions.

Herath and Ratnayake put KSC on top

A fine century by Thusitha Herath who made 104 in 165 minutes and which included 16 fours, helped Kurunegala Sports Club (KSC) to get first innings points in their Coca-Cola division one segment `B` cricket tournament match at the Welagedera Stadium yesterday. Kurunegala Sports Club made 289 for 7 wickets after Saracens sports Club were all out for 194.

Thusitha Herath and C. Liyanage (32) added 107 runs for the second wicket. Saracens who were 120 for 6 wickets overnight, were out for 194 with Chalitha Ratnayake taking 6 for 47. Ratnayake had a good all-round performance and made a quick 55 off 56 balls.

Saracens SC 120 for 6 wkts overnight - all out 194 (C. Sirimanne 80, J. Weerasinghe 17, P. Fernando 27, V. Pathirana 27, Chalitha Ratnayake 6 for 47, S. Lokuliyana 4 for 73).

Tall scoring - SSC set for 1st innings win

Defending joint champions, SSC, look set to get first innings points from Colts in their Coca-Cola Division I cricket tournament match for the Saravanamuttu trophy at Maitland Place. After SSC had made a massive 461, colts replied with 296 for 7 at close yesterday.

Rochana Jayawardene and Suranjith Silva who resumed their knocks last morning with SSC 416 for 6 went on to add 95 runs for the seventh wicket. The former thumped 76 in just 70 deliveries with 10 boundaries and a six, while the latter made 35. Colts in their turn were helped to a big extent by three very valuable partnerships. Sanjaya Attanayake (41) and Viran Perera (61 with nine boundaries off 83 balls) put on 74 runs for the third wicket. Then, Jeewantha Kulatunga (52 not out with 10 boundaries) and skipper Hemantha Devapriya (24 with three fours and a six) made 53 runs for the sixth wicket, while Kulatunga and Suchithra Alexander (26 with four fours) put on 47 runs for the seventh wicket.

SSC 461 in 107.4 overs (Suresh Gunasekera 160, Upul Fernando 112, Chaminda Ranasinghe 33, Rochana Jayawardene 76, Suranjith Silva 35, Suchitra Alexander 2 for 103, Harsha de Silva 2 for 35).

A fine century by Vijith Deshapriya saw Panadura SC obtain first innings points from Moratuwa SC in their Coca-Cola Division I cricket tournament match at the Panadura Esplanade yesterday.

Moratuwa SC made 298 and Panadura SC in reply were 330 for 7 at close.

V. Abeywardene (55) and Sampson de Silva (58) helped to swell Moratuwa SC`s first innings total, while Deshapriya`s 120 for Panadura SC came in 227 minutes with 11 boundaries. He put on 142 runs for the sixth wicket with Shan Liyanage who was unbeaten on 57.

Moratuwa SC 298 (M. Narayana 39, V. Abeywardena 55, S. Soysa 33, M. de Alwis 33, Sampson de Silva 58, Indika Gallage 2 for 65, Surendra Kumara 4 for 66, Mangala Jayasena 3 for 62).

Seneviratne`s century puts CCC on top

Asanga Seneviratne thumped a splendid century for CCC to take the whip hand against the Antonians in their Coca-Cola Division I cricket tournament match for the Saravanamuttu Trophy at Maitland Crescent yesterday.

CCC made 332 and the Antonians in reply were precariously placed at 130 for 6 at close.

Seneviratne who was unbeaten on 92 the previous day, finally went on to make 141 with 17 hits to the ropes and two sixes. Together with Jerome Jayaratne (28), they added 113 runs for the seventh wicket. Except for a 44 run stand for the third wicket between Priyantha Perera (32 not out) and Pasan Wanasinghe (23), the An- tonians seemed to fall prey to the bowling of Lalith Sagara and Nalliah Rajan, who shared four wickets between them.

CCC 332 in 122 overs (Bradman Ediriweera 50, Asanga Perera 22, Jehan Jaymon 16, Asanga Seneviratne 141, Jerome Jayaratne 28, Lalith Sagara not out 30, Priyantha Weragoda 4 for 102, K. Dharmasena 3 for 56).
