Suriname edge Chile on day two
Day two of the Americas Division 3 tournament produced an absorbing and exciting encounter between hosts Suriname and debutants Chile. All this in a feast of runs and exhilarating batting at Snellen Park, a ground getting dryer and faster by the day

After being put in to bat, and losing a wicket in the very first over, Chile settled down to compile an imposing score of 242 for 9 in their 50 overs, put together in textbook fashion.
Undoubted hero of the day for them was opening batsman Paul Hollis, who made a brilliant 109, which included 14 fours and 2 sixes. It was an innings of first-class shot-making and shot-selection before being run out as the tempo accelerated in the final part of the Chilean innings.
For the hosts, perhaps surprised by the Chileans technical ability and measured tactical approach, they rarely put it together in the field, with a spate of missed catches and misfields marring their efforts. Captain Alimoedin Nasrullah bowled tidily for his 3 for 42 in 10, while opening bolwer Shazam Ramjohn was certainly their spearhead, returning figure of 3 for 33 in 8 good overs.
It was a different story when Suriname went in to bat, as their batsmen explosively took the attack to the Chilean bowlers, and raced to 200 for 3 in only the 24th over.

However, a brave and determined Chilean fightback in the field saw the Surinamese side, and the large partisan crowd, suddenly contemplating the possibility of an extraordinary defeat, as wickets fell regularly, and the hosts were reduced to 223 for 7.
But eighth wicket pair Seenanan and Bhoelan saw Suriname home to the target of 243, and their first ever ICC competition victory, by 3 wickets with 16,4 overs to spare.
Thus two interesting and highly entertaining days of competition in Paramaribo. Tomorrow sees Chile take on the Turks & Caicos Islands at Snellen Park in the third match.
