A statement issued by the county said that Hamilton-Brown, the England Under-19 captain, felt he would not get the opportunities at Surrey in the next two years that he believed were needed to progress as a cricketer.

"After a couple of disappointing seasons, Rory has asked to be released from his contract in the belief that this will help him find some form," said Alan Butcher, Surrey's coach. "It's important that Surrey players really want to play for the club and this is why we have agreed with his request. We wish him the best of luck for his future endeavours."

Despite being one of the most promising young talents, Hamilton-Brown has found it impossible to break into the Surrey first team despite their poor form and this summer has been limited to five one-day outings.

It is believed that several counties are vying to sign him with Sussex the favourites.
