Michael Ayres, the former Surrey scorer, has decided against referring his sacking to the arbitration service, ACAS, despite being advised by the Association of County Scorers that he had a strong case for claiming unfair dismissal.
Ayers, who is now reserve scorer for Middlesex, parted company with Surrey at the end of last season following an incident when he went into the Surrey dressing room during the tea interval of a championship match to inform the team that they were bowling at 15 overs an hour, three and a half below the average required to avoid a fine.
According to Mike Edwards, Surrey`s director of cricket, Ayers "started lecturing the players, which I took exception to as he should have been talking privately to the coach or captain. This was the culmination of several unconnected incidents."
Ayers maintained that Surrey had him to thank for avoiding a fine, while Edwards claimed that "all counties in the past had used some creative accounting when it came to over-rates." The Test and County Cricket Board are expected to take a more stringent line on over-rate "bending" this season.
