The MCC batted in a carefree manner and the best stand was for the fifth wicket, when the Nawab of Pataudi and Leyland added 121. Overnight and early morning rain did not affect the wicket, which had been covered, but the outfield was very muddy, the ball sometimes stopping dead. Only just over an hour's play was possible on the second day, when the ground was in a very bad condition, play only taking place in order not to disappoint the crowd.
