Tour match: England Lions v New Zealanders
Wisden's review of the second tour match between England Lions vs the New Zealanders, 2013
At Leicester, May 9-12. Drawn. Toss: England Lions.
Any chance of a result was ruined by the weather, which cut the first day in half and allowed only
55 overs in total on the last two. Rutherford compiled an entertaining century, hitting four sixes as
well as 18 fours. But after he was run out by Woakes the lower order caved in, with No. 5 Brownlie
left high and dry after 162 minutes. Roland-Jones, the uncapped Middlesex seamer, was the pick of
the Lions bowlers. Root, who shared hundred stands with Carberry and Bairstow, then batted for
more than six hours for 179, his third successive score of 175 or more, following 182 for Yorkshire
against Durham, and 236 against Derbyshire. He was only the fourth batsman to achieve this in firstclass
cricket, after W. G. Grace (1876), Clem Hill (1909-10) and Cheteshwar Pujara (2008-09).
Close of play: first day, New Zealanders 184-3 (Rutherford 116, Brownlie 4); second day, England
Lions 219-2 (Root 105, Wright 0); third day, England Lions 315-4 (Root 143, Bairstow 45).
