The Redbacks almost salvaged a draw thanks to a gritty 114 in 461 minutes from opener Shane Deitz.

Deitz needed 438 minutes to reach his century, the slowest ever ton recorded at the MCG in first class cricket.

However once he departed, brilliantly caught by wicketkeeper Darren Berry off Ian Harvey, the Redbacks resistance crumbled.

Veteran off-spinner Colin Miller finished off the innings, taking three wickets, while Matthew Inness, Damien Fleming and Harvey all took two wickets.

The victory gives the Vics their first points for the season and takes them up to six points and third place in the table after three matches. South Australia is on the bottom with no points from three games.
