The Vigne Cup is contested only by teams from Harare, and matches are scheduled throughout the season, interspersed between the national league matches.
The Vigne Cup resumed on Sunday in Harare with the weather once again looking ominous. Although the rain did play a role, fortunately a result was achieved in each of the three matches.
A feature of the matches were the very high number of extras conceded by most teams in the form of wides and no-balls. This can perhaps be attributed to the ball swinging about a bit more than usual in the very humid conditions. Another striking statistic was the high number of run-outs. There were no fewer than 13 run-outs, which perhaps indicates an improving standard of fielding.

Alex won by 4 wickets. The scorers did not trouble to name the fielders taking catches.
Alex won the toss and put the young Winstonians in to bat in bowler-friendly conditions. The match was reduced to 38 overs a side due to rain. The ball seamed around early on in the game, and Winstonians lost wickets steadily. The outfield was slower than usual due to the restricted ability of the ground staff to cut the grass given the current diesel crisis in the country. Gavin Rennie continued his form with the ball by bagging another three wickets, while Andy Blignaut showed some recovery from his injury with two wickets at the end of the innings. For Winstonians, only Chawaguta and Matsikenyeri could dominate the bowling, and the visitors closed their innings at 124/9 after the allotted 38 overs.
Alex made heavy work of their run chase, losing wickets frequently. The Winstonian fielding was excellent and was rewarded with two run-outs from direct hits. In the end Alex reached the target with wickets and overs to spare, thanks almost entirely to Blignaut who batted sensibly to see Alex through to victory. Winstonians did themselves no favours with some wayward bowling, conceding 21 wides in 28 overs.

Old Hararians won by seven wickets.
Pace-setters OH once again produced a polished performance to crush Old Georgians by seven wickets. OGs, no doubt still despondent after losing last weekend's cliffhanger to Alex, were no match for Trevor Penney's side, who are starting to look invincible.
OH won the toss and opted to bowl first. Boasting three bowlers with international experience, the OH bowling was too good for OGs who crumbled to a disappointing 71 all out. The match had been reduced to 32 overs a side, but OH needed only 11.3 to pass the OG total. Eddo Brandes turned in another good all-round performance with 3/16 and a hard hitting 35 with the bat, effectively ending the match as a contest.
Wides were a problem for OGs, conceding 13 in 11 overs.

Harare Sports Club won by two wickets.
Reduced to 43 overs a side, this match produced an exciting, closely-fought contest which went down to the last ball. Universals won the toss and chose to bat first, a decision they were surely happy with after they posted an impressive 255/7. Dion Ebrahim continued his great form scoring 84 and boosting his season's average to over 60. Ali Shah and Brad Robinson also contributed in the top order, and David Mutendera showed he can bat with a well played 27 down the order. The Sports Club bowling was too loose, conceding 12 wides and 11 no balls to a total of 33 extras.
With Mutendera and Douglas Hondo back from a coaching stint with Dennis Lillee in India, Universals were confident of containing HSC. HSC started their innings well, but lost middle-order wickets. Mutendera and Hondo were clearly struggling to adjust to new changes in their actions and were unable to maintain pressure on the opposition batting. Ali Shah with figures of 9-3-21-2 kept Universals in the game, and with two overs left, HSC required 27 runs for victory. Graham Ferreira dispatched the first three balls of the penultimate over for 14 runs which swung the game back towards HSC, who eventually won by 2 wickets in the last over, despite five run-outs in the innings.
