Waqar to miss rest of season

PAKISTAN pace bowler Waqar Younis will miss the remainder of the season for Glamorgan because of his troublesome elbow injury.

Waqar, who has not played since taking four for 46 in the county champions' NatWest Trophy first-round tie against Bedfordshire on June 24, was told after an initial scan that a short rest would cure the injury. But a further examination now indicates it will not heal in time for him to play again this season.

"We're told that rest is the only cure, and any attempt to play will simply set him back to square one," said Glamorgan secretary Mike Fatkin. "The longer-term prognosis isn't too bad, and we'll monitor his progress during the autumn."

Malcolm Speed, chief executive of the Australian Cricket Board, confirmed yesterday that Australia will play a Test this October in Peshwar, in Pakistan's troubled north-west after receiving assurances about their safety.

Warwickshire batsman Andy Moles, 37, is to leave Edgbaston to take up a five-year coaching contract with South Africa's provincial champions, Free State. The pugnacious opener has brought forward his retirement as a player after failing to regain a place following Achilles' tendon surgery.

England's women have recalled left-arm seam bowler Melissa Reynard for the second Test against Australia which starts at Harrogate today.
