Hundreds of thousands of people have been made homeless because of the rain, transport has been very badly affected, with roads being washed away, and most grounds were under water. The national side was unable to train for three days at the end of last week because of the conditions.

Equally worrying is that the Nairobi Jaffrey ground, which is set to be inspected by the ICC on January 7 to see if it meets the criteria to be granted full ODI status, is currently underwater.

The national one-day competition, which was due to be staged in November, was cancelled. "All our efforts were concentrated on ensuring we had grounds ready for the women's qualifier," a board spokesman told Cricinfo. "We have not given up on a national competition and we are aiming to hold it in Feb after the World Cricket League."
