England did not even bother to leave their hotel for the ground, a 20-minute drive away, after overnight rain made abandonment a formality. The West Indies Cricket Board, meanwhile, were counting the cost of a third washout. Initial losses were estimated at around £400,000 and, though insured, the board faced an increase in premiums.
