He was due to replace Steve Magoffin in July and was expected to make his debut against Northamptonshire on July 19. Although he is continuing to play in the ODI series against Australia, he has been advised to rest once the matches are completed.

"Unfortunately the news about Fidel has come as a bit of surprise as we have been in touch with him regularly and all seemed to be going well," said director of cricket Steve Rhodes. "We have immediately started the search for an alternative overseas player and I hope we will have some news soon."

Meanwhile, Alexei Kervezee, the 17-year-old Dutch batsman, has signed a two-year contract extenstion following some impressive performances in the 2nd XI.

"We are delighted that Alexei will remain with the club. He has come on really well this season and is putting pressure on those above him for a 1st XI place," said Rhodes.
