The upcoming matches in the World Cup will be telecast free on public broadcaster channel Doordarshan, following an order from the Supreme Court on Tuesday. The apex court stayed an earlier order from the Delhi High Court that had restrained Doordarshan from sharing the feed free with cable operators.
The court's order came after a plea by the BCCI and Star, who claimed that cable TV operators were getting live feeds through Doordarshan channels free of cost, resulting in loss of revenue for them.
"This arrangement of DD showing free feed had been there for the last seven years. Let it continue," a Supreme Court bench comprising Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose said in an interim order. The Supreme Court has asked Star to submit its suggestions, and will take up the case on February 17.
The World Cup begins on February 14, with India's first match against Pakistan on February 15 in Adelaide.
