Do Bangladesh have another gear?

Match facts

March 16, 2012
Start time 1400 (0800 GMT)

Big Picture

The worry for Bangladesh is that a lot of their chief weapons fired in the tournament opener, Pakistan played below par, yet Bangladesh still lost. Their two world-class batsmen - Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan - got half-centuries, their rising star Nasir Hossain made a substantial contribution, and their left-arm spinners were miserly. There was even the bonus of a three-wicket burst from one of their medium-pacers. There is still room for improvement, of course, but Bangladesh's tendency in recent months has been to underperform rather than exceed expectations, and it is hard not to feel they have already produced their performance of the tournament.

India cannot afford to think that way, but even without Virender Sehwag around to call Bangladesh "ordinary", they will be confident they can handle whatever the home team throws at them. The 2007 World Cup upset apart, India have been dominant against Bangladesh, their batsmen collecting plenty of runs against an attack suited to India's strengths. The challenge for India, perhaps, will be to put in a tight performance with the ball and in the field, rather than just rely on their batsmen to outscore Bangladesh. They started the Commonwealth Bank series with some impressive performances in the field but a familiar profligacy and sloppiness set in as the tournament progressed. With a long stretch of subcontinent cricket ahead of them, India will be hoping their spinners can start exercising the same sort of control over the opposition as they did in the home series against England and West Indies last year.

Form Guide

(most recent first)
Bangladesh: LLLLW
India: WWLLL

In the spotlight

Forget the hundredth hundred, Sachin Tendulkar was not even able to go past 50 in the CB series, and averages 18.62 in eight ODIs this year. That is the kind of poor form that should put any player under pressure to keep his place, even if it is Tendulkar. He did not look too tense at India's optional training session on Wednesday, but cannot ignore his lean run of form. Weaker opposition and familiar conditions offer perhaps his best opportunity to get a big score. He has never scored an ODI hundred against Bangladesh and will want to change that so he can go in to the high-profile match against Pakistan with some confidence.

Mashrafe Mortaza's four-wicket haul against India in the 2007 World Cup remains one of the most memorable performances by a Bangladesh bowler in an ODI. Unfortunately, Mortaza's career has not quite followed the trajectory many though it would after that game, with a slew of injuries keeping him out of action for long periods. His latest comeback, at the age of 28, could be one of his last opportunities to contribute to Bangladesh cricket. He started well against Pakistan, giving away just 13 runs in a five-over first spell, but was taken apart by Umar Gul at the death.

Pitch and conditions

The pitches in Mirpur have been better for batting in the evenings, but the first two matches have been won by the team batting first. The slowness of the pitch in the afternoon did have its effect on India's innings against Sri Lanka, though, with Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli looking to work the ball around rather than score boundaries. The dew in the evening may also affect the Bangladesh spinners, and with India having proved recently that they can chase pretty much anything, MS Dhoni may be tempted to deviate from his bat-first policy.

Teams

After Ravindra Jadeja's poor performance in India's first match, Yusuf Pathan may get an opportunity in the second. India may also consider bringing in Rahul Sharma for either R Vinay Kumar or Praveen Kumar, who were both expensive against Sri Lanka, but Dhoni has always preferred having three medium-pacers in the side. Manoj Tiwary still awaits his opportunity after scoring a century in the last ODI he played for India, but it is hard to see who could replace in the XI. Rohit Sharma did not get an opportunity in the first game, Suresh Raina showed signs of returning to form and Virat Kohli will not want to miss a game being in the form he is in.

India (probable): 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Sachin Tendulkar, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 Rohit Sharma, 5 MS Dhoni, 6 Suresh Raina, 7 Yusuf Pathan, 8 Irfan Pathan, 9 R Ashwin, 10 R Vinay Kumar, 11 Praveen Kumar

Mushfiqur Rahim defended the decision to play just six specialist batsmen against Pakistan, so will probably go in with the same strategy.

Bangladesh (probable): 1 Nazimuddin, 2 Tamim Iqbal, 3 Jahurul Islam, 4 Mushfiqur Rahim, 5 Shakib Al Hasan, 6 Mahmudullah, 7 Nasir Hossain, 8 Abdur Razzak, 9 Mashrafe Mortaza, 10 Shafiul Islam, 11 Shahadat Hossain

Stats and Trivia

  • Virat Kohli averages 152.00 in four ODIs against Bangladesh, with two centuries. He has the opportunity to become the first India batsman, and the fifth overall, to score hundreds in three consecutive ODIs
  • Though MS Dhoni has received criticism for his Test performances, in ODIs, since the World Cup, he averages 99.85 in 16 innings, with nine not outs helping his average

Quotes

"The spinners have struggled so far, but they have to try and do a better job. If they're trying hard, I'm happy."
Mushfiqur Rahim knows the slow bowlers are his main weapon

"Australian tracks were really good for the seamers because of the extra bounce, but here [in the subcontinent] compared to other countries you have to mix it up more, bowl slower balls and use variations."
R Vinay Kumar is aware India need to adapt their game quickly after three months in Australia

@landl47 sir, you know what... reading this article in the morning and reading your comment here just made me a bit angry as to the fact that you said Sachin cant pride much over the hundredth 100 if he scores it against Bangladesh... so the result of today's match is to remind you that never underestimate any opponent that you play against!!! :D NOW do you think Sachin can pride over it?? well I think you were sort of Right, coz his hundredth 100 couldnt give the Indians a victory today!! :P

YAY to Bangladesh Cricket!!! They pulled of a splendid one!!! Memorable game!!!

@ Kumail_Asadi on (March 16 2012, 08:32 AM GMT) :-- I agree with you. Infact what worries me is that even when sachin scored the 98th 100 against England in the world cup that match was TIED. Then when he scored his 99th 100 against South Africa again in the world cup , India LOST that match. Now today SRT and Virat have been very slow in persuit of their personal milestones and india has been about 40-50 runs short in setting the target. I HOPE INDIA WINS THIS MATCH OTHERWISE SRT's 100s WILL BE VIEWED WITH GREAT SUSPICION. Luckily Bangladesh do not have a threatening batting line-up, so It may not be so dangerous for India and SRT may get away with it this time.

99th 100 on 12.3.2011, . & , 100th 100 on 16.3.2012 . . What a wait. Today the team has literally played for his 100th and Virat's 3rd on the trot 100s. The slow scoring cost india atleast 40-50 runs to the team. I hope India goes on to win this match, because if Bangladesh goes on to get this total, this match will not be rememebered for the 100th but will be remembered with contempt for loosing the match for the 100th.

@ freo75 on (March 16 2012, 11:07 AM GMT) :- I agree with you. This milestone of combired ODI's and Tests Hundreds has been actually invented for SRT. This invention means nothing to the real statistics. But now SRT is on track for his 50th 100 in ODI's. Only he will need one more Bangladesh or a lower team to get it. Does he not realise what harm he is doing to his reputation in persuit of these meaningless milestones. By the way if because of this slow scoring by India, Bangladesh goes on to win this match, SRT will get a tag of panvati (unlucky) hundred.

Probably the most selfish innings I have ever seen. Tendulkar cost the team about 40 runs because of his pursuit of a selfish (and need I say completely irrelevant) milestone.

173/2 after 35.5 ovrs. V.Kohli out just now b Abdur Razzak 66. Both these great cricketers were playing for their personal mislestones. Virat wanted the 3rd hundred on the trott to be levels with Z.Abbas, S.Anwar, B.Lara, AB.Develiers etc. And S.Tendulkar (SRT) is striving for his 100th 100. They were very slow. Virat has missed his milestone. SRT seems to be on track for his personal milestone. does not matter if the scoring is slow. But if in the end by any chance Bangladesh go on to win this match the blame will be squarely on SRT and Virat for playing for their personal milestones.

what is ravindra jadeja doing in this Indian line up; he is neither a bowler nor a batsman; can't bowl 10 overs in a match and definitely not a pinch hitter to whatever standard; a wasted spot at the moment which can be used for aspiring good cricketers like Tiwary.

Mr. bMIKE YES team india is here with your tag of team A. but apart from these two tours against england and Australia they were good in their previous tours. some time there are bad patches in your carrier. dont forget the performance in southafrica, newzland, and the previous tours in england and australia as well they were very good with these players only. No. 1 tag was not only the result of wining matches at home, It was a result of wining matches constantly. and of course the great captain and batsman ricky ponting never won here in india. why dont u blame him for not wining here. it is same thing as india could not win there they also cant win here,,then how will you decide who is better.

  • POSTED BY satish619chandar on | March 16, 2012, 7:06 GMT

@bMike : Team "A" loses outside subcontinent.. So, Team "A" should lose in subcontinent as well? You brand cricket nations into two.. Subcontinent and others.. In that case, no OTHERS team dominated the subcontinent touring in last couple of decades.. What to say about them?? Green track bullies or fast track bullies? I think some people just come in to bash India.. bash them when they lose(Inspite of where the match is played) but not when they win.. Where did Australia win the CB series? In home right?? Where did England and Australia beat India?? In their home right?? Do they or their fans hold any rights to celebrate those HOME wins???? Just enjoy the game where u never jknow what happens next ball.. Cricinfo please publish!!

No team in the world can beat India on a batting wicket. India`s strength is batting. But it is weak against good bowling especially on a bowling wicket.Adding to this,India is a weak bowling side. Hence the team that has better bowling, even if it is weak in batting has better chances of winning against India.

Certainly a great opportunity to Kohlis and Rainas to prove that they belong otherwise we will confer that Indian Board did the right thing by avoiding BAN in future cricket plans after findidng themselves at top ICC ranking which has been whitewashed now. Indian bowling is established now and BAN will find it too hot. On the other hand BAN bowling can give them a chance. Let's see with great interest. Down with all the forces who are against encounters among asian sides for whatever reasons. These contests will raise the fighting spirit of the youngsters, i mean khohlis and rainas.

I think today's match, BNG has nothing to loose. They just need to tune up themselves. I believe BNG would like to bowl first. Pick up early wicket like Shachin/Gauti. Then pressure will be on Kholi, ultimately BNG can stop India around 250-270 runs. After that Bangladesh just need little bit passion during their batting. It's a bating paradise wicket. Over all today's match will be fighting. If I say Neutrally-I will keep India by 60% and BNG by 40% to won the match.

@Rizal Hasan, Good to see the pumped up BD fan. I am an Indian supporter. But, I don't mind BD winning. You guys got to come good and become a force in International cricket to bring some much needed life into the cricket. Shakib and Tamim are awesome players. It is a shame that Ashraful couldn't come up as a world class batsman. Bangla need to come up with some good medium pacers. Good luck. I don't think it will happen tonight. May be you will have better luck with the SriLankans.

to all the ppl who are talking abt indian bowlers, yes we don't have quality fast bowlers, but currently if u look at Vinay kumar's performance, he is doing well bowls decent pace of 130kmph and regularly takes wickets, he is a medium pace wicket to wicket bowler, we need such bowler in team, only thing we need is another fast bowler like Yadav,Dinda who can clock 140+ regularly. Praveen kumar and jadeja are playing just becuze of dhoni's mercy.

  • POSTED BY spinkingKK on | March 16, 2012, 5:37 GMT

"India having proved recently that they can chase pretty much anything, MS Dhoni may be tempted to deviate from his bat-first policy". Sorry, you when was the last time MS.Dhoni opted to bat first? Please get your facts right. Anyway, moving away from the topic, India or any team would want to play at least 3 seamers. This is only because of the new ODI rule of using two new balls. I think India should make two changes: Yousuf in for Jadeja and Dinda in for Vinay. If they want to give a game to Rahul, give Ashwin some rest. Tiwary can play next game in place of Tendulkar/Kohli/Gambhir if India wins this game.

  • POSTED BY on | March 16, 2012, 5:37 GMT

2007 WC victory is all that BD fans mumble about, BD has lost 23 matches ODI's till date against IND and won only 2, this is more than a dismal record. BD fans should be practical and should think twice before claiming that BD will win surely against IND, else BD fans are poking fun at themselves, nothing else..

Guys, let me ask you a simple question & I expect a genuine answer. Assume there is a team called 'Team A' who plays well on flat tracks in subcontinents (they might win cups on this flat tracks as well) and then the same Team A goes outside subcontinent and plays with the same opposition very next day & then this Team A gets thrash & gets wightwash. According to the definition of 'flat track bullies' this 'Team A' is called as flat track bullies. Out of all teams who are playing for Asia cup this time is there any team like 'Team A' ?

  • POSTED BY praveen4honestremark on | March 16, 2012, 3:17 GMT

Topic : About Sachin 100th International Hundred. Speaker : Praveen Why is Sachin not able to score 100th Hundred? There are many factors that are playing the part. The first most important factor is his age and body fitness. As body becomes older the reflexes become slow and fitness comes down as every body part is ageing. So,now at 39 years we should not expect Sachin to go after bowling aggressively like how he used to do at young age. So, it is obvious like every other player who looses sheen as age increases, Sachin is also effected. That's why so many failures from Sachin not even averaging above 35 in last 33 innings. His average is 32 in last 33 innings. Here we should realise that he is not even showing good average than Dravid's average in ODI's which is 39. Then why we should retain Sachin? For 100th hundred?? India's win is more important and means a lot, so keeping him aside can give a chance for an youngster to be groomed for 2015 WC. Hope Sachin realise this sooner.

  • POSTED BY on | March 16, 2012, 3:05 GMT

I think Sachin is to play for records than to play for winning of Indian matches. For a century he is still playing whereas Rahul announced his retirement. Sachin should give chance to youngers to play. Whatever, As a Bangladeshi man I don't wanna watch his century against us. And it will be more interesting in Asia Cup if Bangladesh can defeat India today's match.

  • POSTED BY on | March 16, 2012, 0:42 GMT

Both kohli and Tendulkar wil be eyeing hundreds for the records. On the other hand, BD batters would want to repeat their top and middle order batting display against pakistan, but They gotta get in excess of 270 to throw any challenge to the Indians batting second. As some of you above, I also think Dhoni might be tempted to chase in these pitches and given their recent forms with bat.

  • POSTED BY shovwar on | March 16, 2012, 0:33 GMT

Bangladesh has nothing to lose in this match . If they win ., it will be a world cup for them and if they lose , they will be doing what are they doing best past these year i.e. losing simple. On the other hand india has everything to lose . If they lose it will be a shame for us (india). So better not take them lightly .We (indians ) dont want bangladesh beating the WORLD CHAMPIONS (INDIA).Best of luck to both the teams .And as an indian hope that sachin gets his hundred soon becoz he is LEGEND OF CRICKET EVER BORN ...

  • POSTED BY landl47 on | March 15, 2012, 23:52 GMT

How pathetic will it be if Tendulkar, after failing in two full series of tests and ODIs against Australia and England to score his 100th hundred, gets it against Bangladesh? No disrespect to Bangladesh, but they really aren't in the same league as the major sides yet. It won't be an achievement Sachin can point to with much pride.

  • POSTED BY RaviNarla on | March 15, 2012, 23:19 GMT

I would say replace Jadeja with Yusuf Pathan Rohit with Tiwary Vinay with Rahul Sharma But Dhoni is going to keep the same side for sure. He is superstitious and won't change a winning side.

  • POSTED BY Ukayholic on | March 15, 2012, 22:45 GMT

Its about time dhoni grab Sir Vinay kumar and Sir Jadeja by the collar and sideline them for couple of matches and give opportunities to those poor players like dinda and tiwari itching to get a chance.

  • POSTED BY samincolumbia on | March 15, 2012, 21:52 GMT

@Bangla fan - The reason Sachin has never scored a hundred against Bangladesh is because he never had to, since your team mostly gets all out before reaching triple figures!

  • POSTED BY HyderabadiFlick on | March 15, 2012, 21:09 GMT

When whole of the Indian cricket team was struggling for most part of Sachin's 23 years career and he was performing consistently then no one uttered a single word. Be practical he played only 9 ODIs after almost a span of 1 year after the world cup.Dhoni has been struggling God knows from when in test cricket and Dhoni does not make any big statement when a test series is in progress. All of a sudden he will start speaking when playing lesser grade ODI cricket.Sachin should remain in the team as long as he wants to be. Many of my friends are already speaking of not watching cricket after Sachin, Laxman & (Rahul) retires. They held Indian batting for so many years together and India lost so many matches because others did not perform and now it is time to return the favour to them by waiting.Funny quote against him.India loses when Sachin scores a century.I know many wonot agree with me but think. There are few people who are like diamonds, they shine even in dark & Sachin is one.Jai Hind

But if Bangladesh can pull off a few good deliveries, get some luck going for them, there is no way BD cant defeat the well-drilled India. India has a mediocre bowling line-up which Shakib,Tamim and the likes can give a hammering in familiar conditions at Mirpur. Go tigers!

  • POSTED BY on | March 15, 2012, 20:55 GMT

i would really like to see Enamul Haque (left arm spinner-top wicket taker in BPL) to replace out of sorts Shafiul Islam. In bd conditions spinners can do more against a strong Indian batting line up !

  • POSTED BY Precioustar84 on | March 15, 2012, 20:46 GMT

Jadeja and Rohit both need to be dropped from the team but since Rohit did not play last match, Dhoni has an "excuse" to play him against BD. Dhoni will give chance to Vinay Kumar. Dhoni has the tendency to give chances to "new" players when stages are hard so we won't see Tiwary and Dinda here either because that way these players fail and Dhoni has an excuse not to take them again. Enough with Sachin already. Its not "poor form" its AGE that doesn't give you same reflexes. Sachin should be spending more time grooming his son now if he truly loved cricket and not personal milestones. I have respect for Sachin on 99 hundreds than I would for him if he had 100 or more because it proves nothing about him besides selfishness. He won't score it against BD but if he has to than I rather see it against Pak. Seeing too much favoritism with Rohit, Sachin and Jadeja from Dhoni is just annoying now. Anyway best of luck Team India and BD.

i am an indian... but i dont understand why my fellow indians are writing of bangladesh... they are good young side... one good spell from their opening bowlers is enough to put india in the defensive... if they can get gambhir and kohli cheaply... their left armers can restrict india easily... and all who are critics of jadeja.. jadeja scored at an avg of 16.83 in CB series while sachin scored at an avg. of 18.62.... and jadeja saves 10-15 runs in the field... so if sachin can play in the team so does jadeja... jadeja had a good record coming to Australia taking 24 wickets in 13 matches.... scored 220 runs @31.4....

  • POSTED BY on | March 15, 2012, 19:44 GMT

@ Adithya Raghunathan - MS Dhoni is the best captain any team can find in the subcontinent conditions. He's tailor made to lead a side in these conditions. He's not adaptive enough to a change of environment, but in the Indian Subcontinent he's the perfect choice for captaincy. For any team literally.

For last more than a year we are listening the same tune and feeling the heat of the hype about Sachin's century of centuries. As Kashi0127 has already mentioned way to put Tendular out of his misery. But they can not do that because multinational corporations have spent millions of dollars already with ads and commercials and waiting to celebrate Tendu's cherished century and also launch their products as well. Poor Tendu.

Since then he has played 60 ODIs and has taken only 58 wickets at a high average of 40.74. And its not like has been a miser by stopping the runs either as his economy rate has been a mediocre 5.12 during this period...........

I really hope that Bangladesh can keep politics and cricket separate for this game. Please, no more personal points to prove - and play professionally with the team in mind. When you are on the pitch play for the game. That goes for reporters too. Bangladesh team spends too much time with the press, and reporters dramatizing. Don't lose focus on what is important - to win. Learn from Pakistan, they avoided the media and focused, and focus they did - in style with 5 points. Can the media leave the players alone please?

I do not understand the inclusion of Ravindra Jadeja at all. Are there performance stats or something relevant of that sort to warrant his inclusion? What is it really that he has done, that makes him eligible to be included in the playing eleven ever? There are great many mysteries that boggle the mind, the lost city of Atlantis, disappearance of Mayans and Incas, the Bermuda Triangle, I bet this one is up there right on top with all the other great mysteries - "Why is Ravindra Jadeja in the playing eleven of any team that is not a gully cricket team?".

  • POSTED BY Nampally on | March 15, 2012, 15:59 GMT

India need 4 specialist bowlers + one all rounder- Irfan Pathan at #7. Ashwin#8, Rahul Sharma#9, Vinay#10 & Dinda #11.It must be noted that Rahul is a good batsman & a very accurate leg spinner who can bowl 10 overs @<5 runs/over. Both Praveen & Vinay bowled uneconomically at nearly 7 runs/over. India has to focus on tight bowling - Cannot afford the luxury of including 7 runs/over bowlers. Vinay was lucky to get some wkts. at the end but Praveen did not take any wkts. Dinda dominated the Wkt. taking department in Ranji & needs a break to show his talent. Including Yusuf pathan is a waste of time because he will NOT get to bat @ #7 & he is not an economical bowler + poor fielder. On the other hand Rahul will bowl accurately & take wkts. So the team needs 2 changes from the first ODI vs. SL. Rahul for Jadeja & Dinda for Praveen. There is logic in such changes. But logic is not in Dhoni's dictionary. His "seat of the pants & gut feeling" selection is hurting India badly.Wake Up, MSD!

Sachin was pathetic against better competition over the past few months, averaging just 18 runs? BD batsmen have better average over the same period. India's true colors were seen since they left their own turf, beaten pathetically in England and Australia. BD had a better performance when they played England in 2010. Were you guys complaining about the level of competition when India got their behinds handed to them by BD in 2007? Why the complains now? Please come down to earth Indian fans, you are not the number 1 team in the world, we have seen you true colors last summer.

India wil come good!!!!! he is not an agressive captain!!!!!!! look at the bowlers he relies???? praveen ,vinay, these , ashwin , they are not productive!!!!! pick dinda aaron, umesh ishant sharma!!!!!! these fast bowlers have a very good future, unless dhoni gives a chance!!!!!! already Rohit sharma is wasted by him, manoj Tiwary is on his way so as pujara
