Australia's captain Michael Clarke was taken by ambulance to Sutherland hospital in Sydney overnight after suffering a severe bout of gastroenteritis.

Having returned home early from the Test tour of India due to back and hamstring problems that have since ruled him out of the IPL, Clarke was waylaid by the stomach trouble on Sunday night and treated overnight before returning to his home on Monday.

"Cricket Australia today advised that Michael Clarke was hospitalised overnight with gastroenteritis," a CA statement said. "Clarke has since been discharged from hospital and CA confirms that he is recovering at home."

Clarke is working to return to fitness in time for the Champions Trophy tournament in England which serves as a precursor to this year's Ashes series.

Does this really qualify as news? It's not like he's missing any cricket. Jesse Ryder gets bashed and in a comas --> that's serious. Michael Clarke has diarrhea . . . not so much

i know he's been seriously in the runs for a while now but this really is taking it to extremes.

What an unfortunate picture next to that headline. The only thing sensible to add is, Michael Clarke, would you like something to read?

I don't think it has anything to do with Indian food. Its more likely to be caused by the utter rubbish served up to him by the Australian selectors.

England will be hoping he recovers in time for the Ashes.

First the loss to India, Injured back, No IPL and now a bad bout of Gastro.... life's changed for Clarke in the last few months. He made a wise decision by opting out of IPL... Good to take time away to work on ur health and fitness... things will look better... Give the cricket fans a good Ashes series...

  • Tlotoxl on April 1, 2013, 7:32 GMT

That can be really nasty, took me over a week to get the energy to get out of bed and I didn't feel 100% for upwards of 6 months...
