First Test

SRI LANKA v INDIA 1993-94

At Kandy, July 17, 18, 19, 21, 22. Drawn. Toss: India.

Rain in the central hills of Sri Lanka made this the shortest-ever Test (excluding those completely abandoned). Only 12 overs - 49 minutes of play - were possible, on the second day, compared to 17.2 overs in 50 minutes at Nottingham in 1926; ironically, the rest day was the sunniest of the week, but the Sri Lankan board said there was no provision in the playing conditions to make use of it. In the brief interlude of cricket, Sri Lanka were put in and reached 24 for three. Kapil Dev, playing his 125th Test to equal Sunil Gavaskar's record for India, picked up one wicket and Prabhakar two, in wet conditions ideal for swing and seam bowling.
