United Arab Emirates 241 for 6 (Saqib 101*, Khurram 61, Gauchan 3-36) tied with Nepal 241 for 9 (Khakurel 55, Mandal 44)
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details

After a thrilling tied final in Sharjah, the United Arab Emirates and Nepal shared the Asian Cricket Council Elite Trophy. Saqib Ali led UAE's recovery from 24 for 3 to help them post 241, a target that looked in Nepal's sight after their 94-run opening stand. However, they kept losing wickets consistently, and eventually needed 12 off the last over with just two wickets in hand. Shakti Gauchan, who had taken three wickets earlier, smacked Shadeep Silva's left-arm for a six, but could manage only one run off the last ball.

UAE's innings was the opposite of Nepal's. They got off to a horrible start, and were 70 for 4 after 19.5 overs. That brought together captain Khurram Khan and Saqib, who have both played ODIs for UAE. They added 87 for the fifth wicket, but the big push arrived only in the last four overs that went for 46 runs. Saqib was only 88 going into the last over of the innings, but hit Basanta Regmi for a six and a four off the last two balls to bring up his century.

UAE carried the momentum into the second innings, but Subash Khakurel and Anil Mandal got Nepal's chase off to a solid start. However, they lost their way in the middle of the innings, going from 165 for 2 to 222 for 8. Sharad Vesawkar, who came in at 165 for 4, held the chase together with wickets falling all around him. He even managed his unbeaten 38 at better than a run a ball.

However, when a splendid piece of fielding from Saqib ran Binod Bhandari out, Nepal still needed 20 off 17, and had just two wickets in hand. Gauchan practically blocked out the 48th over, and they now needed 18 off the last two. Khurram went with his quick man, Arshad Ali, for the 19th over, and conceded just six runs. That increased the pressure, but Nepal also had slight opportunity: a spinner was to bowl the last over.

Gauchan played out another dot before two singles brought it down to 10 off 3. He then swung hard at Silva, and managed to clear long-on. Silva erred again next ball by fumbling on a run-out opportunity, allowing the batsmen to steal a couple after hitting straight to long-on. Another such mistake, and the title would be Nepal's. Gauchan this time hit to long-off; UAE made no mistake, and honours were even after a hard-fought match.

@sagar Khanal: Mate donot expect that from BCCI but CAn need to talk with PCB...

what a surprise game, thanks for good job cricinfo, but please mention nepal home page not a other country, now a days pakistan helps to afganistan to promote the cricket,so why not india helps in nepal,i request to bcci to more ceperience our heros.

Nepal cricket is now on top form and they are beating the countries who play on world cup as well as ODI status nations. Not only i am surprised with Nepal's performance every emerging nation are focusing about Nepali cricket. We hope Nepal will go up to the world cup ladder and reach world cup. This is not impossible if they go on their way with like this kind of performances.

Posted by   on (October 13, 2012, 16:08 GMT)

Really hope that Nepal can follow this up with promotion from World Cricket League Division 3 next year. They deserve to play in the World Cup qualifier and seem to have lots of passionate fans, like Afghanistan. Much rather see those two sides in the 2015 WC than Canada or UAE with all their expats and no followers.

Well done both the teams!! If BCCI helps Nepal like PCB does to Afghanistan, Nepal may develop into a strong strong team!! However I doubt BCCI will ever do that cause they dont want other nations to do well!! Nepal Cricket Board should try to make arrangement with BCCI to tour states, attend coaching camps etc!!

UAE has stagnated. Apart from wins here and there V Afghanistan, they have not been able to improve much!! Something is wrong so check it out and spot it UAE!!

Well done boys! Keep it up.

Congrats to Nepal. Tough luck Afghanistan, need to sort out that 100% loss jynx against UAE. Both the finalists played well but the difference between these teams that UAE heavily reliant on journeymen from Pak,Ind,SA etc. and Nepal has produced their own indigenous players. Some may argue that more 50% of UAE population is expat but UAE can not even get 100 people to support them but Nepalis gets the stadium filled almost completely. UAE could not afford field a team for 2010 Asian Games because only 2 of their team members were Emirati Arab Nationals (because even a foreign origin person born in UAE is not a National)-. Hope for the 2014 Asian Games we are able to see a full team of native Arabs, Nepal government should give more support to their cricket because youi really have the support of people. The teams like Uganda, PNG and Nepal are the real developing teams not from WCL championships. And they will prosper. Good luck.

Congratulation!!! Really excellent performance by both teams specially by Nepal. Thank you cricinfo for doing great job. However, Nepal is underestimated by you that Nepal is not listed under your countries category but country like USA who are not superior than Nepal are listed. What's this???

Posted by   on (October 13, 2012, 4:51 GMT)

All Hail Nepal!!! Bravo performance and thankx shakti for holding the nerve!! Nepal shouldn't only be qualified for Asia cup but also be considered for ODI status along with UAE. Nepal is a consistent performing team with lots of passion, Nepal can be a good market for cricket. for ex., final match between UAE and Nepal was played in packed stadium with lots of Nepali fans. So, I request ICC to consider passion rather than country status. It would be fruitful in long run.

Special Performance by Nepali Team. Could have been all ours. Three cheers for Nepali Cricket Team. Still long way to go. I couldn't see the match live ... :(

Congrats to Nepal.............

Congratulations to Nepali cricket Team. 3 big achievements this year - Promoted to Div 3, Became 7th in T20 qualifying tournament and has now won the ACC Trophy Elite. Thanks to ESPNCricinfo for covering the event and providing commentary.

Thank you cricinfo for the ball by ball update. You guys did a tremendous job. Excellent achievement for Nepal. I am happy to see that our batting has finally improved and many thanks to Coach Dasnayake. I am a little disappointed at ACC. If the bottom two teams in the tournament get relegated, then its only fair that the top two teams be promoted to play for the Asia cup. In my opinion, both UAE and Nepal are better off losing against India or Sri Lanka by 200+ runs than beating Bhutan or Saudi Arabia by 200+ runs.

Definitely nepal is on the up and on the radar to get an affiliate status and hopefully compete in the biggest arena that is the 2015 worldcup. Afghanistan and Nepal are the two affiliates to lookout for from the indian subcontinent. Congratulations and Good luck from India.

One of these teams deserve to play Asia cup along with Afghanistan. my small request to Icc please let one of these teams to participate in the Asia cup. i know they dont have ODI status but this will be a boost for cricket in their country. Specially countries like nepal they have always qualified for the U19 world cup and won the Plate championship once after facing NZ and SA. So there is passion to play this game. What kind of Asia Cup is it? u decide the champion with only 4 teams playing with each other?

Well done boys...You have made Nepal proud...Shakti Gauchan is hero and villain both...Had he hit the boundary in the last ball, the trophy would be solely Nepal's as the champions... Vesawkar is villain taking singles in the 48th overs onwards and retarding the chase though he was well set batsman... Try to play fearless cricket... !!! Whatever the outcome is, it is great to be champion albeit halfheartedly...!!! Thumbs up!!!

Nepali cricketer are in great form nowwww. Best of luck for comming matches.

Posted by   on (October 12, 2012, 16:05 GMT)

Should've had a bowl-out or super over considering it was a final but I wonder what would've happened if it was the real 50 over world cup with both teams on a tie. Surely you can't have "joint-world champions" :))

Its heart warming news for all Nepali cricket fans. I hope its our coming off age moment for Nepali cricket. Nepal had beaten South Africa, Pakistan, NewZealand and other top dogs of world cricket by 2000!! A special appreciation for our new captain Paras Khadka and coach Dasanayke for instilling belief in players!! Well done Nepali crickte team, proud of you guys!!! Lets give top dogs some fight in Asia Cup, we sure can beat Bangladesh!!!

Congrats victorious Nepalese cricket team!!! Now, expect our heroes to perform their best in ICC Div. III competition!!!

Posted by   on (October 12, 2012, 15:33 GMT)

Nepal played wonderfully well throughout the tournament. At one time, when anil mandal and subash khakurel were batting, Nepal looked to win comfortably but UAE fought back well. Nepal would be satisfied to draw the match and lift the trophy as a joint winner alongside UAE. Good luck to the Nepalese cricket team in future matches. Keep on the winning streak.
