Big Picture

Finally, the finals. Nearly a month after the tournament began, Australia and Sri Lanka have been confirmed as the top two sides and India, the World Cup champions, are on their way home. Now it is down to the World Cup runners-up, a Sri Lankan side that looks strong under the leadership of their restored captain Mahela Jayawardene, and the No.1-ranked ODI side, an Australian outfit that disappointed at the World Cup but has made some positive steps towards regeneration.

Sri Lanka's progression has been especially impressive after they started the series with a pair of losses followed by a tie. Their only failure since then came because of that Indian chase in Hobart. Dinesh Chandimal has been outstanding in the middle order and the rest of the batsmen have made valuable contributions, while Lasith Malinga has been the tournament's leading wicket taker and looms as a key man in Sri Lanka's finals plans. The loss of Thisara Perera, who won't play any further part in the series due to a back injury, will hurt but they showed on Friday in Melbourne that they can get by without him. Sri Lanka have never beaten Australia in a Brisbane ODI but they did win their only match there in this series, against India.

Australia have been up and down, and most importantly they have been down in their past three games against Sri Lanka. It has been a funny old tournament for Australia. They have used three captains, one of whom, Ricky Ponting, was dropped mid-series. Their two best batsmen have been David Hussey, a 34-year-old on his last chance in the ODI squad, and Peter Forrest, a man playing his first international series. One of their leading one-day bowlers a month ago, Ryan Harris, has been axed, and Ben Hilfenhaus, who was a Test specialist for the past two years, has become an important member of the attack. Ultimately, they need to find a way to handle Malinga and keep Chandimal and co in check, or else Michael Clarke's unbeaten series record as captain will come to an end.

In the spotlight

Shane Watson batted at No.3 on Friday and he indicated that it's a position he might fill on a permanent basis if the selectors want to persist with David Warner and Matthew Wade as an opening combination. Watson looked solid in scoring 65 and importantly, given his three-month injury lay-off, was at the crease for two hours. "It's nice to be able to spend some time in the middle," he said. "It's the first time I've really spent some time like that for the last few months."

After an unproductive start to the tour, Lahiru Thirimanne made a couple of half-centuries in the second half of the series and has proved a useful man at No.5. He might be well advised to give away the paddle sweep, though, after it brought his downfall in each of his two most recent innings against Australia. Thirimanne was also a handy bowler in a depleted Sri Lankan attack on Friday, although his medium-pacers may not be required if the bowling group is at full fitness on Sunday.

Team news

Michael Clarke is expected to be fit but the question for the selectors is who to leave out to squeeze him back in. On form, David Warner is the man who would be most vulnerable after a quiet series but it is more likely the selectors will leave the top order alone and leave out a middle-order player. The experience of Michael Hussey and the outstanding form of David Hussey could mean Peter Forrest misses out. Despite the strong start to his international career, Forrest has had two single-figure scores in his past two innings and that could cost him. The selectors must also decide whether to bring Brett Lee back in after he was left out in Melbourne.

Australia (possible) 1 David Warner, 2 Matthew Wade (wk), 3 Shane Watson, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 Michael Hussey, 6 David Hussey, 7 Daniel Christian, 8 Brett Lee/Ben Hilfenhaus, 9 James Pattinson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty.

Thisara Perera has been ruled out due to the back injury he suffered in Friday's game but Angelo Mathews (calf) and Farveez Maharoof (back) are likely to play. On the seam-friendly Gabba pitch, Sachithra Senanayake might be surplus to requirements. Chamara Kapugedera has been flown in and could strengthen the batting order.

Sri Lanka (possible) 1 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 4 Dinesh Chandimal, 5 Lahiru Thirimanne, 6 Chamara Kapugedera, 7 Angelo Mathews, 8 Farveez Maharoof, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Rangana Herath.

Pitch and conditions

The Gabba has produced two high first-innings scores in its two matches in this series: Australia made 5 for 288 against India and two days later Sri Lanka scored 6 for 289, both winning scores. The forecast for Sunday is for a shower or two and a top of 30C.

Stats and trivia

  • Australia have lost the first final in each of the past three tri-series they have hosted
  • Sri Lanka have won five of their past seven ODIs against Australia
  • Prior to Daniel Christian's effort on Friday, three Australians had taken ODI hat-tricks; Lasith Malinga had taken that many on his own

Quotes

"Playing at the Gabba is going to be a big advantage for us, with the pace and bounce that's there."
Shane Watson

"I'm sure the Australians will come really hard at us. We just have to make sure that we play the kind of cricket we've been playing."
Mahela Jayawardene

Well fought series all round. But, SL seems to be the better of the 3 teams. If they do win, they are worthy of it. BTW I'm an Indian.

@Ravenous When Australia can have the Big bash league why cant India hold the Ipl. The Ipl is paying the salaries for a majority of cricket players around the world like the Sri Lankans who are under payed by their board. The ipl is not the root cause for all of India's problems. It is because of the Ipl that we have players like kohli, ashwin, rahul sharma, umesh yadav, varun aaron. The problem is when the selectors choose players based on Ipl performances and not domestic achievements.

  • csowmi7 on March 4, 2012, 3:41 GMT

@Kays789 and Ravenous. I admit that at the moment the Indian team is playing terrible cricket and I have no problem with a Sri Lanka Australia final. What I do not like is the Sri Lankan fans claiming to be number one and the "rightful champions". For a long time our batting success outside of the subcontinent has been largely dependent on Tendulkar and Dravid and before Ganguly. Now that Ganguly has retired and Tendulkar and Dravid are out of sorts we are struggling and looking for replacements. Barring the events after the world cup India played strong cricket outside home in SA, in the previous cb series, in Australia, the t20 wc, the 2003 wc and in england where we won 2-0.

There was no surprises so far in d tournament, it going as i expected. srilanka dominated aus, aus beaten india many times, and india did d same to srilanka. take away of d this cb series is d team selection is one to be blamed off for d failures of every team. since india dominated srilanka by beating them 2-1 but failed against the aus 3-1 which couldnt out play srilanka. no team can approach other team with the previous winning xi.

@Suresh Lalvani on (March 03 2012, 10:27 AM GMT) who knows? That ball might have been ended up in a wicket? That ball was in the 30th over,Yes if that ball had been bowled the result would have been different it's obvious, but how can you so guarantee that India would win?

  • fguy on March 4, 2012, 1:56 GMT

SL were lucky with their tosses and didnt have to bat under lights in all but one bad match where aus were off color and they didnt have to chase much. would love to see how they perform facing lee & co on gabba pitch under lights.

  • Sinhabahu on March 4, 2012, 1:30 GMT

@abhyudayj, Read the "Stats" article about this match. Sri Lanka has the best batting average and second best bowling average. India has the worst batting average and worst bowling average. It wasn't luck that brought us to the finals but skill. India was by far the worst of the 3 sides. But I know it hurts you to accept it, so you're free to make up whatever you want to make yourself feel better. Just don't go burning your players' homes this time :)

  • hasitha81 on March 4, 2012, 1:05 GMT

@Uday Kumar If SL does not deserve to be in ICC, India is better why could not even get into the finals. SL and Aus are certainly better teams than India in this tournament. Pls accept it. India had a good day where the chased down 320 with the bonus point courtsey Kohli's good day of batting. I'm not taking anything from the Indian side for that performance.

Pls think before you make any comments. I am a SL supporter forever but I enjoy the game without trying to decide who should and should not be in ICC. Considering the size of India and popultation etc. we are proud of our small nation doing BIG. I have no offence against any team but I do not like undue critical statements about SL.

We are proud of our SL team what ever happens.

  • ali00 on March 4, 2012, 1:01 GMT

Good to see Watson bat at No.3 and i think it is good to have a player like him bat at No.3. He is world class player.

  • Trickstar on March 4, 2012, 0:39 GMT

@jonesy2 LOL I've just checked, he averages 24 this series, your right the standard of Australian cricket that average should get him the openers spot for years to come. Par for the course when your picking guys like Forrest and Cowan, the cupboard is certainly empty isn't it, I suppose that's why you feel like you have to talk it up all the time, insecurity.

  • lankanlioncric on March 3, 2012, 22:28 GMT

i dont understand y INDIANS r here commenting in CB series...lol

  • on March 3, 2012, 22:21 GMT

Seriously, what's with the beef between Sri Lankan fans and Indian fans? I'm Sri Lanka, and I hope it disappears soon. By the by, I think many people here don't know the meaning of the word 'flat-track bully'. A flat-track bully is not someone who bats well on flat pitches, and dominates the bowlers; it is someone, from any sport, who does well against weaker opponents.

Yet, I do agree with some of the comments by the Indian fans, that nowadays Sri Lankan tends to make it to the finals, only to panic and lose in the finals.... kind of reminds of the Indian cricket teams of the 1990s and 2000s.

Let's be honest, the main reason why we won the 1996 word cup was because we had an awesome leader like Ranatunga, who never backed down; and the only reason why India won the 2011 world cup was because Dhoni has an ice cold mind. Nearly all the other Sri Lankan and Indian captains I saw, used to panic or give-up at crucial moments - hopefully Mahela does better this time...hopefully.

  • Lallubhai on March 3, 2012, 21:50 GMT

Whoever wins this tournament needs to be applauded , It was arguably the best CB series ever played . So many close games . But the finals are going to be an anticlimax as the performance of the century has recently been played.

  • yasask on March 3, 2012, 21:18 GMT

@champike mendiz unfortunately shaminda eranga's injured at the moment.

  • Kan12 on March 3, 2012, 20:40 GMT

Well done Sri Lanka. You deserve the cup!

  • binojpeter on March 3, 2012, 20:07 GMT

All the best to both the teams from an Indian fan. But I have a slight preference for Srilanka as they are our neighbors. Come on SL, you can do it, we have done it in the past. Hoping for an exciting contest between bat and ball.

  • wonderstar1 on March 3, 2012, 19:30 GMT

@chetan well said. u said it all. looks like the lankans cannot stop commenting about India. these fans they blame IPL for everything. Lets see they have a poor record in finals. WC final 2011,2007, Asia cup 2010.

  • johnathonjosephs on March 3, 2012, 19:02 GMT

The Lankans are soooo good at getting to Finals (probably best Team in the world to do that). For example, the 2007 WC, the last 2 Asia Cups, the Compaq Cup, the ICC 2020 WC, the 2011 WC Final, and now the CB Series Final. Winning those finals is a completely different ball game though and SL has not bee performing well in Finals as of recent. They have, however, smashed Australia in the last 4 games (even the 1st game they lost went down to the wire), so should be great contest. The chokers vs the weak

  • johnathonjosephs on March 3, 2012, 18:58 GMT

Based on both the Indian and Sri Lankan supporter's comments, it seems that a rising rivalry is establishing between the Indians and Sri Lankans. That shouldn't be so. The sad fact is that because of today's global warming, in 70-80 years, there won't be a Sri lanka just like most shorlines cities today will be wiped out by the ocean. Where do you think those 20 million will be relocated to? Of course India. It is a real threat, and by 2020, the Maldives will be gone from the face of the earth. They have already started government programs of relocating the Maldivians to Sri Lanka and India. In short, we are all still brothers and sisters and there should be no silly quarrels.

  • jayantak on March 3, 2012, 18:57 GMT

Just to add my voice to- priceless1,yorkslanka,Sinhaya, bigcric27 etc (comments above), - PLEASE, not Kapugedara agin! How many times has he been shoved into the team, to produce 10/15 runs, no more! A PASSENGER! Sri Lanka always seem to carry at least one passenger- it was Jehan Mubarak or Chamara Silva. Now its Kapugedera.

  • mark2011 on March 3, 2012, 18:48 GMT

Best of Luck for both team specially for SL.. hope they can play well and win this tournament to seal their first ever tri series in Aus. few years back SL had diffidculty in beating Aus in Aus but now it has changed and team is believing that they can beat Aus.. that is good sign. Also it is notable that whenever we had problem it is after or during Aus tour SL team come up nicely.. so it is happeing again. Aus is where largest SL fans are found for crikrt match outsiede SL, not even in Eng SL crowed gather like what we saw in last match. So all looks nice hope guys play well too...BUT WHATEVER HAPPENDS WE LOVE OUR TEAM...ALL THE BEST AGAIN SL TEAM!!! Still some indian are crying here & there... may be difficult to bear that SL chase them out of the series...Unfortunately still try to degrade SL...what pitty... dear Indians pls mind your business now atleast..You have no business here... whether SL win or lose... IT IS OUR TEAM..we dont throw stone to players house like in india..

  • Htc-Baseball on March 3, 2012, 18:38 GMT

@Chethan Puttaiah : beautifully said bro, some serious jealousy is being reflected here.Indians need not bother these, records speak for India- srilanka games. we need to answer just the ausies and not any lankans, by the way hoping for a malinga hundred in asia cup, try bowling ur full overs dude..

  • on March 3, 2012, 18:36 GMT

Why kapugedara????? Srilanka Selectors are the fools in all time.. Why not Bhanuka Rajapakshe he is very aggressive batsmen and very suitable player for that position. Kapugedara is very fail player even in domestic i think he has some connection with the selectors.

  • mysay on March 3, 2012, 18:14 GMT

SL did very well to reach the finals, but they must keep in mind that it was by a skin that they made it through. Mahela and Sanga need to focus flawlessly as anything less than 280 will not be enough. Dil will have to be his natural (aggressive), and please, please, please roll your wrists on the short stuff you get. Kapu will lift the fielding so not a bad choice if you can cut 20 odd runs. Malinga will need to be more venomous and Maha, please stick to basics and bowl to the stumps. Chandimal and Thiri do what your doing don't change a thing accept sticking in the crease while at the non strikers end. That being said no reason why SL can't win the first two to wrap it up without needing the third. Damn, I should be a coach.

  • abhyudayj on March 3, 2012, 18:05 GMT

@ Sinhabah-Getting in finals and loosing in finals twice on world cup and now reaching finals on luck, the story continues

  • kunderanengineer on March 3, 2012, 17:59 GMT

As an Indian fan and a bigger cricket fan I'm delighted to see an Aussie-SL final simply because it will provide more competitive cricket. I just think that India would have succumbed tamely to their former tormentors, Hilfenhaus and Pattinson. Furthermore, India have played like a collection of individuals whereas SL really play with a team concept. I also admire the perseverance of the SL bowlers and the character that Malinga in particular showed in rebounding immediately from that humiliating shellacking. Chandimal is developing into a future superstar of the game. Thirimanne, Matthews and Pereira also will be a big part of their future. Looking forward to a great nail-biting series!

  • abhyudayj on March 3, 2012, 17:57 GMT

Aussies had bad luck against srilanka so srilanka qualifies,Aussies will win the series by 2-0

  • randikaayya on March 3, 2012, 17:52 GMT

@kalpman: What a farce man, India are out, why aren't you?? You say Malinga was made by Sachin at Mumbai? I'm hurting with laughter, remember 2007 WC and Mali's world record 4 in 4 against SA? Even by then he was a major superstar, before your puny IPL.. Good luck to both finalists, may the best side win!

  • srt_mkp on March 3, 2012, 17:51 GMT

Did not expect cricinfo to get facts wrong..clarke has already lost one match against INDIA so he does not have an unbeaten record as a captain....

  • raam9888 on March 3, 2012, 17:47 GMT

srilankan team played as a one unit that is the reason they r in finals. bt indian played and behaved as a universal team and players that is the reason they r way back to home.

  • harikeshan on March 3, 2012, 17:34 GMT

@Chethan Puttaiah and other Indian Fans, Sorry we mediocre SL Team added more misery to already sour and bitter Indian tour down under by winning on Friday and sending your bunch of flat deck bullies packing. We have lost finals, but never cried foul instead took it our stride as we always do and moved on just like in the World Cup finals of 2007 and 2011. Unlike India we are not a nation with abundant talent, where cricketers are made gods one day and demons the next. We go out there and give our Best; we've had captains who've resigned on principle accepting the blame, instead of pointing fingers at old and tired legs. We don't play for personal milestones but for our country. We still may come short in this series but one thing for sure we Sri Lankans will be mighty proud of our boys and what they have achieved after being counted down. Go Lions Roar!!!

  • jayantak on March 3, 2012, 17:34 GMT

Just to echo the comments o Sinhaya, jonathanjosephs and so many other SL fans- PLEEESE! NOT Kapugedara ("cotton house") AGAIN!

  • Sano27 on March 3, 2012, 17:06 GMT

SL can win the CB series as they are the best side in all departments so far....they can chase down any score & also can score decently if bats first....also excellent in their fielding....AUS is weak as their most wins comes when they bats first...if they bat second against India then the final line up will be different....good luck SL !

  • stormy16 on March 3, 2012, 16:54 GMT

This will be SL's toughest game on a bouncy Gabba deck. SL should throw caution to the wind and attack the Aussie fast bowlers in the hope of throwing them off their game. Its a real pity that injuries SL are faced with specially to Mathews who will not probably bowl. I dont see how playing Kapu resolves the bowlng issues. They need to play Prasad for Sachithra but most of all the senior guys at the top of the order have to take on the Aussies. For Australia they must win this game as Adelaide will suit SL. Pattinson will be the key as he has the pace and bounce to run through SL.

  • on March 3, 2012, 16:51 GMT

The truth is Indians are flat track bullies....they are virtually unbeatable on flat and dead wickets but on sporty wickets India struggle....We saw that in Eng and Aus where they were raped 4-0!!Even a team like Bangladesh would have done better!!!

  • on March 3, 2012, 16:38 GMT

Congratulations Srilanka, Wish Srilanka all the best.Best of luck Mahela & co;You will go back to Srilanka as champions, having beaten both world champions.

  • on March 3, 2012, 16:24 GMT

SriLankan team played the best cricket among the three teams, so far in the tournament. They deserve to win the cup too. But I don't understand some of their cricket fans. Be proud of your team's excellent performance, and rejoice. But why indulge in India bashing? Is it coming out of the complex that your board often seek help from the Indian Board, directly as well as indirectly? A very complex complex indeed, arising from the conflict between pride and need, as any half-decent psychologist would vouch for! We saw a little bit of that even from the two best gentlemen in the team. So, really can't find fault with the ordinary fans. Sorry for them! Friends, forget the internal conflict and enjoy the moment. GOOD LUCK for your highly committed and hard working team, also brimming with talents.

  • on March 3, 2012, 16:20 GMT

@jonathanjosephs - dude difference between India n Bangladesh n any of the team u support is--- India r world champions n others r not...if u argue tat they won on flat track pitch so then y din others win on the same pitches...?? Coz Indian team played well ...!!!

  • jonesy2 on March 3, 2012, 15:55 GMT

aha what? david warner has had a "quiet series"? check again. i love how if an aussie batsman hasnt scored like a hundred every game then he is apprently out of form haha peter forrest is basically coming off a ton and might miss out. cant believe how strong australia are, the only thing more unbelievable has been the 3 losses to sri lanka. that will change tomorrow when they actually start trying and have something to play for

  • on March 3, 2012, 15:47 GMT

NO PERERA!!!!!!! hopefully wont cost baldy to lions :(

  • cambrose1211 on March 3, 2012, 15:43 GMT

Kapugedara flown in? for what? he is failing in the on going domestic season. i may be an arm chair critic, but anyone who has followed the recent domestic season especially of the NCC will know what i am saying.

  • NALINWIJ on March 3, 2012, 15:39 GMT

Let us not forget that we saw the best tri-series ever in Australia with World number 1 playing the world cup finalists.Finalist were decided on the last over of last game, There were 5 matches decided in last over including a tie and the fantastic run chase by India in Hobart.Three cliffhangers between the 2 finalist and I expect a great series. Absence of Perera in a fast pitch might swing the game Australia''s way but I feel Adelaide may be a fair pitch for both sides.Where will Clark fit in. Only thing clear is that Wade is better down the order and Warner-Watson is a great combination.Husseys cannot be dropped. Forrest scored a century and Christian got a hatrick but his batting has been ordinary.Nice headache for selectors.Kapugedera may fill in as a batsman for Perera but not as a bowler- worse headache for SL selectors.

  • on March 3, 2012, 15:37 GMT

good luck to srilanka win final two match first and get champion ship we support you

  • Ajithd on March 3, 2012, 15:32 GMT

It proved small changes can make big differences. Same SL team performing poorly two weeks back. Mahela opened as the skipper. Maharoof came in. Small changes in batting order. Suddenly they have found the right combination. It will be not easy to beat them at the moment. They have regrouped and united under Mahela. But India have another chance to prove at Asia Cup!

  • maddy20 on March 3, 2012, 15:25 GMT

@LankaFTW You do not make a valid point amigo. A dead pitch does not have anything for the bowlers. Dead pitches = 350 or 400+ wickets. SL only reached 270 because of Mahela's master class. I remember that SL was 121-4 at one stage. That does not happen on dead wickets. Anyway SL is gonna lose the first two finals and will go home soon. And just to remind you, we won the CB series last time we were here. Does SL have what it takes to win it? A BIG NO!

@criclover.... my friend you should thank god that there was no Rusell Arnold in the commentary team otherwise I guarantee you would have Muted your TV!

  • Aashi_sl on March 3, 2012, 14:53 GMT

Its a pity that there will be no srilankan voice in the commentary box of star cricket. it looks like they too have been expecting a India vs Australia final series even before the start of the tournament. There are not many world class commentators in SL but Russel Arnold cud have done a good job.

  • Kays789 on March 3, 2012, 14:51 GMT

@ csowmi7: mate do you think you could do us all a favor and just scoot? like the flat track bullies you support did? everyone knows india is abysmal outside of india and your comments only go on to show that the delusional indian fans are also in denial like the rest of the cricketing system in india.

  • on March 3, 2012, 14:50 GMT

Whoa!!! Wait a second. All these comments about Sri Lanka about to win the cup. Don't forget Australia. just coz srilanka won a few matches does not mean they win the Cup. I think Australia are gonna thrash them like they did many times in the past. With Clarke back and Oz ready to go I think it's gonna be..........THUNDER DOWN UNDER!!!!

  • on March 3, 2012, 14:41 GMT

world champion india is out from cb series. hahaha what a comedy.

  • on March 3, 2012, 14:38 GMT

    its only SL vs Aus...No India.....So please guyz..be with it..no INDIA..never be...

  • playitstraight on March 3, 2012, 14:37 GMT

I can't understand why the selectors didn't make Mahela captain after Sanga retired from the captaincy. They should've chosen him, but they ended up with Dilshan, who was a total failure. Mahela should at least be the captain until the 2015 World Cup but time will tell.

  • on March 3, 2012, 13:58 GMT

Kapugedera is a fine player, but why not get Upul Tharanga to bat at Tissara Perera's place? Upul is also a left hander and is capable of scoring quick runs.He has several ODI centuries to his credit and can hit sixes when he gets the eye in.

  • on March 3, 2012, 13:40 GMT

its really peaceful here at the comments section now :) time for some real cricket to start.

  • on March 3, 2012, 13:34 GMT

I know Thisara was an allrounder but he's more of a bowler than a batsman. Why did the selectors fly in Kapu. Instead they could have flown in a fast bowler.

  • Ravenous on March 3, 2012, 13:04 GMT

@csowmi7 : I can understand your frustration mate. Your team of circus falied your expectations and now you are trying to feel good about yourself by down-talking the SL team who shut the door on your face. Mate, it's not SL, it was the Aussies who shut the door on you by not doing enough to win the last game. They were so sick and tired of your average team..they've been thrashing you day in and day out all around Australia in the last few months. They just want a worthy oponent..no let me rephrase that; The deserve a worthy oponent. And for the past reocrds mate, they are not worth an indian rupee. Can you pull out a record showing Aus getting beaten by SL in three consecutive games? Please don't bother about this CB series anymore as you clearly have a grudge over your rivals. Not a sign of a healthy personality mate and not good sportsmanship. But ..please..knock yourself out with the IPL circus!!!

  • MyFineLeg on March 3, 2012, 12:48 GMT

@ Chethan Puttaiah. SriLankans do admire great cricketing gentlemen like Sachin and Dravid. Trying to rule world cricket and bullying others through money/IPL does not get India many friends. Arrogance of certain Indian players too add to the above. If ICC has decided on DRS, it should be implemented. It brings in an additional dimension. No hard feelings between neighbours. Cheers !

  • on March 3, 2012, 12:45 GMT

Shaminda Eranga should have been Tissara's replacement...please SLC make the right decisions...and have UDRS in the finals

  • JustIPL on March 3, 2012, 12:38 GMT

Aussie are number 1 ODI team in ICC RANKING and should use this opportunity to ensure that they remain there.

  • manikandan.p on March 3, 2012, 12:34 GMT

hi all bros, please don't comment about india, because they were out of tournament. now the final is lanka vs aus, all the asian will hope lanka will play better then aus, will win the cup. best of luck for srilanka.

  • on March 3, 2012, 12:32 GMT

We got our revenge on them, simply by knocking the so called champions out of the series. We were written off by a lot of ppl and yet we won and are through to the finals. Great win considering how we got hammered at Hobart. Good luck Maiiya and the team we want you guys to play very gud cricket and deserve every singl win we get :)

  • Herath-UK on March 3, 2012, 12:16 GMT

This series showed Sri Lanka dominating over Aussies (3-1 with one bonus point),Aussies dominating over India (3-1 with two bonus points) and India managed to be ahead of Sri Lanka (2-1 only with one bonus point). This shows Sri Lanka is a real class act ,any team beating Aussies at a trot at home deserves all the praise. Ranil Herath - Kent

  • on March 3, 2012, 12:13 GMT

I want to say bad rules which implemented in CB series. When team winning in a normal circumstances point will be 4 to 0 whereas bonus come then 5 to 0.But this is wrong. It should be 5 to -1.That means whenever team concede bonus point then they should be penalized deducting 1 point (that means -1) so when comes final stage of the tournament it help to choose best team unlike current CB series rule. Lucky SL win the last match. Otherwise sad story for SL and very unfair too. But no body talking about that.

  • area1985 on March 3, 2012, 12:09 GMT

I think its time for CA a full test series for srilanka, including venues mcg & scg, im sure with this form they could beat australia in test as well, like they done in SA, its pitty srilnaka didnt give any test in australia concerning there great run in odi's in aus!!!

  • on March 3, 2012, 12:05 GMT

watever aussies do ,they are suppoesed to be greats!!!!! whether it is good or bad

  • Ravenous on March 3, 2012, 11:53 GMT

Now that the circus is out of the way, we can focus on some real cricket. The comments here make much more sense too. Good luck Aus and SL.

  • on March 3, 2012, 11:50 GMT

Yes, now that INDIA is out why not SL & AUS opt for the DRS in the Finals Three & give a message to the INDIANS that Cricket is played hard & is a gentlemans' game.Well done Sri Lanka U have learnt the hard way & are now playing as a team. Hats off to the youngsters who have performed well through the series,& shame on Sanga, Mahela & Chandimal 4 throwing their wickets away when well set & Thirimanne gifting his wicket by repeating his paddle shot.Shrewd captaincy it was to post DILSHAN at Deep Long on at the MCG where David Hussey was surely going to hit the ball over to that point where Dil completed a wonderful catch. Playing as they are SL should go 2 winning the best of Three.

  • on March 3, 2012, 11:43 GMT

Thisara's replacement should have been Shaminda Eranga.. talaented player.. performed well against Aussie in SL...

Indian's were always flat deck bullies ..will be for ever :) ... Good luck SL ..

SRI LANKA HAS A GOOD HISTORY OF MAKING THE FINALS AND THEN WE KNOW WHAT HAPPENS

  • bigcric27 on March 3, 2012, 11:41 GMT

Not having perera in the side for the finals is a big blow for SL, getting Kapu as a replacement is not the right choice..... he in no all rounder, Kapu's performances in the recent domestic competitions - 152 runs in 5 list A matches / 316 runs in 9 first class Innings. Please selectors, we all know he is a good player let him prove it first give more time in the domestic games he will come out strong. I really hope the SL selectors are keeping an eye on the young Banuka Rajapaksha he looks a very promising cricketer for the future, he should be given a chance soon.

  • SLChampika on March 3, 2012, 11:30 GMT

  • on March 3, 2012, 11:19 GMT

Now India are out of the tournament but still so many Sri Lankan supporters are commenting about India! This only shows the important of Indian team in world cricket. Without India the spice and flare or cricket is gone. SL fans cannot enjoy their cricket without commenting about India, I pity you guys. Leave us and our IPL alone, think about your team. Any way best of luck for finals, lets hope the cup remains in subcontinent.

  • csowmi7 on March 3, 2012, 11:15 GMT

Lets not forget they were humiliated in South Africa, Pakistan, and at home by the Aussies. I suppose 3 wins suddenly make Sri Lanka number 1. Lets see if Sri Lanka can top the ICC test ladder and hold it for 2 years then we'll see. I presume Sri Lanka DESERVES to win this tournament just like they DESERVED to win the world cup but were thrashed by Gilchrist and Dhoni. Sri Lanka also DESERVES to be the number one cricket team in the world but are living in a fantasy like the Indian selectors.

  • criclover90 on March 3, 2012, 11:12 GMT

dear cricket fans nice finally two deserved teams in the finals...wish you all the best but i worried about how the some commentators behaved in last match between SL VS AUS they always talk like india have to come to finals ok that is their personal wish, but they comment the ongoing match toward their wish really ridiculous especially sanjay is bad on the way of commentating i hope this is not a true professionalism of their job....i hope some others also may observed like so if so please publish here

  • csowmi7 on March 3, 2012, 11:11 GMT

Sad to see the Sri Lankan fans counting their chickens before they hatch. At the moment they are playing better cricket than India that too only in this series. Doesnt mean Sri Lanka have always been better than India. Taking out the fiasco after the world cup India have been much more consistent than the Lankan Lions. Barring the 1996 world cup they have done nothing. Lets see if Sri Lanka can win this series, another world cup, a test in australia, draw a series in south africa, win the t20 world cup then we'll see if Sri Lanka are as good as India.

  • chapathishot on March 3, 2012, 11:06 GMT

With MJ at helm ,this is a different team out there. The last game against Aussies should be the first chapter in the book of captaincy. He very good in tight situation but can loose his cool when opposition is on the attack.Likie Gilli in 2007 or Kholi last week. But could have won the WC 2011 if he was captain but again could not have scored that 100 in the final if he was captain.

  • Saambaru on March 3, 2012, 10:57 GMT

Sri Lankan Lions Go Go Go ..Whole world knows you are unstoppable..You are a tiny nation smaller than a dot in the world map but great guns with a big heart.Being big does not mean the greatest, but the spirit & quality you all always embrace.

    Good luck.

  • on March 3, 2012, 10:46 GMT

As a srilanka supporter and as a cricket lover who hardly miss any match srilanka play, i would rather say bringing kapugedara is not that much of a bad selection, since kapu never had a clear sweet path to show off his real talent, since he bat in no 7 position, but whn go through past matches, kapu is also a young bunch of talent, so pls guys will gv ths guy a chance, he is selected since he deserves that of his first class performance last few months, and mind im sayin after mahela, and sanga we must have backups from our young bunch of players and kapu also still 24, so itstoo early to wish to eradicate his cricket career.. Just be open minded and think ... To whom it may concern. Wish u all the best lovin sl team, and its nice to see aus are in final..

  • on March 3, 2012, 10:27 GMT

India received one ball less in the tied match against Sri Lanka. Otherwise they would have qualified for the Final.

India and Sri Lanka would have ended up with the same number of points, but India would have been placed ahead of Sri Lanka on the basis of head to head matches won.

  • SLDude on March 3, 2012, 10:11 GMT

@sl_cricfan, I also agree with you. upul tharanga should play instead of kapugedara

  • Laka_Kandy on March 3, 2012, 10:05 GMT

last time when we played at austrailia we won the 1st final ( due to dilshans,s 5 or 6 run-out ) kapu also part of that & we have done well before Symonds & Ponting hammered at Sydny

  • Zoro_1 on March 3, 2012, 10:01 GMT

Why Kapugedara? There are better players like Frank Karunarathna and Bhanuka Rajapaksha.

Kapugedara has not performed in ODIs for a very long time. Unwise decision.

  • nilb on March 3, 2012, 9:49 GMT

Thissara perera will be greatly missed in the finals. He can bat and also the second highest wicket taker for Sri Lanka. he woud've been useful in the fast bouncy pitches. Kapugedara can fill his shoes in batting but he cannot bowl. Anyway hope SL will do well.

  • on March 3, 2012, 9:49 GMT

Good Luck Sri Lanka........you can do it

  • Ozcricketwriter on March 3, 2012, 9:32 GMT

I like Watson at 3 or 4. I think he is better there than opening, same for tests. But he is better at either than at 7 or 8 like he used to be.

  • Siva-The-Human on March 3, 2012, 9:15 GMT

Cograts SL to win the CB cup.Yes! You have luck. You won the legue match flukely with this vulnurable player (except chandimal he is the future of SL) due the luck only. I hope this luck will continue for final also.

  • buncers on March 3, 2012, 9:11 GMT

The new SL coach seems to be settling in well. Now we need a good team of Physios - How many more to be added to the injury list before SLC get the message.

  • atuljain1969 on March 3, 2012, 9:11 GMT

I will go with Australia for the finals though outcome could be 2-1 or 2-0, though even if Srillankans win I won't be surprised. They are play consistent good cricket. Their batters specially Chandimal has proven his art beyond the years of cricket he has played. He is somewhat in the mould of Umar Akmal of Pakistan.

Wish good luck to Sri Lankan for defeating Aussies hands down, when Indians even after more then 3 month could not dent their citadel with all the world class batsmen at their disposal.

  • on March 3, 2012, 9:07 GMT

My suggestion is to include Upul in playing 11 as a middles order batsman since he is adaptable for any situations of the match and he is knowingly well the Aussis conditions better than Kapugedara. my playing 11 are Mahela, Dilshan, Sanga, Chandimal, Thirimanne, Upul, Angelo, Maharoof, Herath, Kulasekara and Lasith.

  • on March 3, 2012, 9:07 GMT

It's an irrational decision to add kapugedara in , where as more promising and consistent Players like Bhanuka Rajapakse and Dimuth karunarathne have been hopelessly performing well ......

he went for a couple of DUCKS in the las t couple of weeks.... He can score 100s but massively inconsistent .......

Overall a silly decision, i reckon

  • Herath-UK on March 3, 2012, 9:04 GMT

what kind of replacement is kapugedera for sri lanka?? he does not feature in the squad for asia cup.. and in flown in for 'finals' of a tri series.. and above all, the preview is including him in probable 11.. i feel as the final is best of 3, lanka will try again upul tharanga at the top for the first final atleast.. they should do that.. tharanga is much experienced.. tharanga, dilshan, chandimal, jayawardene, sangakara, thirimane, matthews, maharoof, kulsekara, malinga, herath.

for australia, they should give d hussey a rest as he has played major role in all the games.. if warner fails in 1st final, then he can be left out..

  • Champagne_Cricket on March 3, 2012, 8:49 GMT

Hi FAB_ALI, cricket does not always go by past performances. Take India as an example. World Test Cricket champions not so long ago and now 4-0 series whitewash from England and another whitewash handed down by Australia. ODI World Cup Champions in 2011 but humiliated in the ODI series in England and now not reaching even the finals of the CB Series in Australia.

  • Perera32 on March 3, 2012, 8:48 GMT

@FAB_ALI: Your're right SL have done badly in most finals but don't forget the tri nations tournament in January 2010, SL beat India in that final. It's a shame Thisara Perera is injured, he was so important in this tournament for us especially his fielding and that cameo where he hit a 4 and 6 to beat Australia. But I think Kapugedara will perform if he gets to play, because he will get dropped permanantley if he doesnt perform. His Fielding is also brilliant probably better than Dilshan's. Good Luck Sri lanka !!!

  • yorkslanka on March 3, 2012, 8:43 GMT

Why add kapugedara when our batting is performing but we are struggling for bowlers?as others have said tharanga could slot in at six and we should have brought suranga lakmal in who is now fit and due tokay in the Asia cup next week...I would have thought prasad will come in for thisara at the GABA given the wicket...I don't think w can win the trophy angst we will give our best. Getting to the finals was a big achievement, given our form before the tournament...good luck Sri Lana, continue to make us proud...

  • on March 3, 2012, 8:43 GMT

Well done and well played SL to the finals.India can leave heads high after that splendid performance.Aussies will come back really hard and playing our natural game is the best answer . On comparison pressure will be less for us and Mahela and the team should capitalize on that. All the best SL.

  • on March 3, 2012, 8:41 GMT

Don't know why everybody is talking of putting Forrest out. If there's one guy who should sit out it would be Warner(purely on form). Let Watto and Wade open followed by Forrest and next in line of getting dropped would be Cristian. Since the bowling workload will be shared by Watto, i think he's not needed and anyways he has not been that good with bat.

  • LankaFTW on March 3, 2012, 8:39 GMT

JUST TO REMIND YOU FAB_ALI all of what you have mentioned are in the past this is the future and anything can happen. JUST ANOTHER REMINDER FAB_ALI India are on there way home and Lanka are still in Australia. ONE LAST REMINDER FAB_ALI the Asia Cup final and WC final India won were in flat dead pitches, which is India's ONLY forte.

Thank you Kavindeven & Dushyant Garg for your support. Unfortunately there are some fans, not all, out there that give everyone a bad name. We should be supporting one another because we are after all neighbours and we should stop trying to point out each other faults such as our friend FAB_ALI has done.

Good Luck Sri Lanka in the CB Finals, win or loose we made it.

  • on March 3, 2012, 8:32 GMT

my suggestion is to include Upul Tharange in playing 11 instead of Kapugedara, upul can be handy for middle order since he has capablity of adapting him in any possitions and got used to paly in Aussies conditions, my playing 11 are Mahela, Dilshan, Sanga, Chandimal, Thirimanne, Upul , Angelo, Maharoof,

  • priceless1 on March 3, 2012, 8:30 GMT

Looking forward greatly to this. Finally a worthy opponent, and one that must start as favourites, injuries notwithstanding. Can we Aussies reverse the trend? I have no idea and that's a plus by my reckoning.

  • Lakpj on March 3, 2012, 8:17 GMT

@Erica Herewini ok then let's assume that they lost other 2 ODIs to SL (Hobart and Sydney) on purpose as well. what a master plan by the Aussies. lolzz. People still doesn't seem to understand that AUs are never the power house they were till 2008 or so. now almost all of the members of that invincible team had gone. Clerke and Watson are good players. but they are not in the class of ponting, gilchrist, hayden, waugh brothers etc..

  • jasonpete on March 3, 2012, 8:17 GMT

Good luck to both teams. We need to remove Warner and open with Watson.keep Peter Forrest in the playing 11.What's wrong with some of SL fans here? I used to think Indians fans are arrogant ,oh boy by seeing some of the SL fans in yesterday post match article,I need to change my analysis. Both srilankan and Indian fans sail in the same boat.Get over it and grow up for good,Its cricket and not war between you two.sigh

  • maxximoo on March 3, 2012, 8:06 GMT

Fantastic to see SL and AUS in the finals. Now of my earlier predictions only 1 to be fullfilled. IND whitewashed in tests. SL and AUS in ODI finals. Now if I am right IND will loose a test series on home soil.....;)......If every game is as close as the last round robin game it should be a ripping final series. Best of luck and good sirit to both teams!

  • SLfan on March 3, 2012, 7:49 GMT

@ ButWhatDoIKnow - I also agree with you...It's good if we can have DRS for rest of the matches. But don't think that it will happen because it's doubtful whether sponsors will agree to implement it in a middle (rather at the end) of a tournament.

  • FAB_ALI on March 3, 2012, 6:41 GMT

JUST TO REMIND ALL OF YOU - SRI LANKA'S RECENT RECORD IN TOURNAMENT FINALS: LOST to Australia in WC Final 2007. WON against India in Asia Cup Final 2008. LOST to Pakistan in T20 WC Final 2009. LOST to India in Asia Cup Final 2010. LOST to India in WC Final 2011. Anyways they have got a good habit of making it to the finals!

  • 31dinu on March 3, 2012, 6:40 GMT

i think Aussies will really come hard on us as they used to be,but our plus points are ,We have Mahela as our captain, each every player in good form and our recent past record against Aus.. Chandimal and Thirimanne are the find of this tournment.both look solid, quick and always rotating the strick also playing some big shots in the space of singles..with the two new ball we cant see much of rever swing from Malinga, but he's still the best ........also hope kapugedara will try to earn a place for him atleast now .... All the best Lions....Lets ROAR......

  • Sinhabahu on March 3, 2012, 6:19 GMT

And so Sri Lanka make it into the finals while India take an early flight home. The contrast between the so-called "punching bags" and the world champions cannot be more stark. LMAO!

  • on March 3, 2012, 6:17 GMT

Being an Indian I am as sad as always, but at the back of my mind I was thinking that if India were able to reach the finals and perform well in couple of matches, their whole 3 months of horrendous performance would have been brushed quietly under the carpet. Now atleast they are where they need to be after such shameful performance. Think a lot our dear BCCI bosses and please sit for a while and ponder now. BCCI is swimming under cashpool but then it comes from brand value which in turn comes from performance.

  • Romenevans on March 3, 2012, 5:44 GMT

Good luck Sri Lanka. Happy if the cup remains in Asia again. Indian Fan Here!

  • ButWhatDoIKnow on March 3, 2012, 5:41 GMT

The 2012 CB series has without a doubt been a fantastic cricket tourney, and has now come to the 'best of three finals' climax. The only thing missing in this series is the DRS. It is my understanding that while AUS and SL were in favour of its implementation IND was not. Therefore, it was not used ( since ALL participating teams needed to agree)... But now, IND has been eliminated and probably has left the aussie shores by now. So why not bring in DRS with the consent of the two remaining teams for the best of three finals??? After all, this format of competition is designed for the best- most consistent team to emerge as "winner" (affording them a "bad" game or two), so with DRS in the finals the chances are even better of that happening!!! :)

  • on March 3, 2012, 5:37 GMT

Don't get rid of Forrest. Drop Warner, I reckon, for this finals series. If someone can't buy a run, then, by all means, bring Warner back in. But until then, maybe save him until the Windies tour.

Let the finals begin.. well said indeed.. Pace of Aussie bowlers against wall of consistent SL batsmen.

  • on March 3, 2012, 5:21 GMT

Please why all the commentators were expected an India VS AUS final.do not favor teams when you do the job.

They should not put others so badly And now they would realize the mistake what they did. I do not know

Forget dropping a batsman... when Clarke returns, one of the bowlers should go - either Doherty or McKay, depending on the pitch conditions. With Christian and Watson in the team, and Clarke and Hussey as part-timers, it's overkill having 4 specialist bowlers in the team and it's leaving us far too light on in the batting department.

Australia must be happy to play in Gaba with the pace freiendly pitch with lost of pace players from Sri Lankan team. But to be honest I think Sri Lanka can put come presure on Australian team from batting side. In this tour there are 4 Sri Lankan batsmans in top 10. Ohh I forgot another thing.. Malinga is there who can make big different in the match. If he become the best bowler on this tour in different pitches, then he could be good recource for Sri Lanka in this pace friendly pitch.. Anyway It is hard to guess anything at this point... Australia has very good history with bounce back at the end, So lets see what happesn on next week.. Hope to see tough 3 more games...

It's kinda ironic from the cricinfo Indian news reporters to come with a headline like "At last, let the finals begin", when they play 100's of useless IPL games in India before playing the final. The right news headline should be, "At last the misery of Indian team ends as it heads home".

  • Cpt.Meanster on March 3, 2012, 4:45 GMT

Even before the start of this series, I retorted that it was a flawed one. The tri-nation concept is a dead sub-culture of one day cricket. After nearly a month, we finally have 2 deserved 'finalists'. I mean.. seriously, Australia would have been better off playing SL in a 5 match ODI series and let India go back home much earlier. This shows the greed of cricket administrators world wide which is killing the game. This series could have been much more better with 2 round robin stages followed by a single final game. As an Indian supporter I won't be paying attention to what happens down under any more BUT good luck to both SL and Australia and may the contest reach the third game.

Kapugedera? Why??????? Anyways, in hindsight, pretty embarassing for India. They were the World Cup winners and have taken the EXACT SAME TEAM (except for Yuvi and Munaf) to Australia where they got hammered. India really have to address their losses outside the subcontinent, otherwise what is the difference between them and a team like Bangladesh?

@Brydon Coverdale Sri lanka has won against south africa at GABBA. So lets make it as two matches not only match. Tomorrow will be the 3rd match.

David Warner should be the one who should be left out. Even the one 60+ score he made this series, there were full of chances, and he also got Mike Hussey run-out. Watson and Wade at top, Peter Forest to provide solidity to middle order along with Clarke. With Warner & Wade at top, Australia has been in the 2 for nothing position many times this series, and Forrest and Clarke had to bail them out.

Dreaming. Oz lost last game on purpose. SL will loose by a big margin, even though, I like SL team a lot.

Sachin is responsible for india's ouster from the finals because malinga picked up 4wkts against aus now, sachin developed malinga by regularly playing him in the ipl, that's why malinga has reached great heights, atleast now lets see whether sachin drops malinga or not from the mumbai team for the betterment of world cricket!!

Hope Maharoof And Anji play in the Finals.... We need them badly.......Maha is kind of Bowling all-rounder and Angi is batting all-rounder(Kallis/watson for us).... those two give the balance that we need..... Good Luck boyz...........

  • KelvinLTR on March 3, 2012, 4:11 GMT

the best teams remain! good luck both! but We are Sri Lanka.

Very bad preview.Peter forrest wouldn't be dropped as he is in great touch. The man to go will be probabely warner.Watson should open the batting.

  • merandy on March 3, 2012, 4:03 GMT

Looking forward for exciting cricket. I am sure there will be 3 finals and my feeling is that SL has a better chance of winning the finals.

why don't channel noine ever have co-commentators representing the opposition to balance the never ending over-nationalistic hysteria of Healy and Slater? Offering a balanced view shd be a basic tenet of broadcasting?? How informative it could be.

  • Sinhaya on March 3, 2012, 3:59 GMT

Pleeeeeeease do not play Chamara Kapugedara. If you translate Kapugedera into English, it means cotton house. Sachithra Senanayake will be far more useful in both batting and bowling rather than this unwanted Kapugedara. Calling Bhanuka Rajapaksa would have been a better idea than useless Kapugedara.
